Anton Heiller

Anton Heiller (born September 15, 1923 in Vienna - Dornbach ; † March 25, 1979 ibid) was an Austrian composer , organist and university professor.

Life

Anton Heiller received his first piano lessons from his father at an early age and was also taught harmony and counterpoint. In the 1930s he was trained on the organ by the organist of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna , Wilhelm Mück . From 1941 to 1942 he studied organ, piano, harpsichord and music theory at the Vienna University of Music and was called up for military service in 1942 after completing his studies.

After the end of the war he became a professor of church music at the Vienna University of Music in 1945, where he taught the subjects of organ, composition and, from 1969, church composition. In 1950 he took over the management of the "Collegium Musicum for contemporary music".

Heiller was a respected concert organist who devoted himself in particular to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach . From 1947 he went on several concert tours as an organist, harpsichordist and conductor , which took him to Switzerland and the Netherlands , where he won first prize in the 1952 improvisation competition in Haarlem .

In addition to his teaching activities at the Vienna University of Music, Heiller led numerous master classes and conducted summer courses. His students include leading organists of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Martin Lücker , Michael Radulescu , Peter Planyavsky , Roman Summereder , Ekkehard Schneck and Ernst Triebel .

Heiller has been honored several times, including the State Prize for Music in 1954 and the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1969 . He also won several prizes at international organ competitions.

Heiller was married to the pianist Erna Heiller .

He died in Vienna in 1979 after suffering a first stroke in 1974 and his left hand was partially paralyzed.

Act

Anton Heiller created almost exclusively church works and compositions for organ in a richly polyphonic and chromatic style. His compositional work includes masses , requiem , psalms , choral works, motets , cantatas , oratorios and orchestral works. In his compositions he combines traditional Austrian music with elements of modernity, including the twelve-tone technique . Paul Hindemith had been a friend and mentor of Heiller since 1950, and he premiered Hindemith's Concerto for Organ and Orchestra in New York in 1963. Heiller is regarded as a leading figure in church music in Austria and southern Germany in the second half of the 20th century.

With his impetus to overcome the romantic organ building and to further develop it after the organ movement, Heiller made great contributions to Austrian organ building after the Second World War. Above all, the teaching organ with mechanical slide chests that he designed and initiated for the then Vienna Music Academy, built in 1958 by Johann Pirchner / Steinach am Brenner , set the tone for several generations of organists. The instrument is now in the parish church of Sandleiten in the 16th district of Vienna, Ottakring .
