Elisabeth Cruciger

Elisabeth Cruciger (or Kreuziger, Creutziger etc.) (* around 1500 in Meseritz in Hinterpommern ; † May 2, 1535 in Wittenberg ) belonged to Martin Luther's circle of friends and was the first poet of sacred songs in the Reformation environment.

She was born as Elisabeth von Meseritz into a Pomeranian aristocratic family and was brought to the Marienbusch Premonstratensian monastery in Treptow an der Rega as a child . She took classes in reading and writing, learned Latin, and studied the Bible and chanted psalms. Through Johannes Bugenhagen she got to know Reformation ideas, converted to the Lutheran faith, left the monastery in 1522 and went to Wittenberg , where she lived in Bugenhagen's household and in 1524 married the theologian Caspar Cruciger (a student and colleague of Martin Luther ). As a pastor's wife, she also took part in the theological table discussions, Martin Luther addressed her as “Dear Els”. Cruciger maintained close contact with Katharina von Bora . Elisabeth gave birth to a daughter and a son, Caspar Cruciger the Elder. J. had. The daughter Elisabeth (* 1529) married - as the widow of Rector Kegel - around 1563 in Eisleben D. Martin Luther's (1483–1546) son Hans Luther (1526–1575).

Elisabeth Cruciger is considered to be the first hymn poet of the Evangelical Church . In Wittenberg, where the family lived at Collegienstraße 81, there is a memorial plaque.
