Christoph Genz

Christoph Genz (born March 1, 1971 in Erfurt ) is a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Genz attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig and was a member of the St. Thomas Choir . He studied musicology at King's College of the University of Cambridge . There he sang in the famous Choir of King's College . He was a singing student of Hans-Joachim Beyer at the Leipzig University of Music and of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf .

In 1995 he won first prize at the international singing competition in Grimsby, and in 1996 first prize at the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig . In the 1997/1998 season he was a member of the Basel Theater ensemble . He also made guest appearances at the Opéra de Nancy , the Théâtre de Champs-Elysées in Paris, the Opéra de Lausanne , the Scala in Milan and the Semperoper in Dresden.

In 2000 Genz made his debut at the Hamburg State Opera , whose ensemble he belonged to from 2001 to 2004 and where he a. a. Tamino in the Magic Flute , Walther von der Vogelweide in Tannhäuser , Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail , Oronte in Alcina and Chevalier in Dialogues des Carmélites . In the 2006–2007 season he sang the tenor part in Neumeier's ballet based on Mozart's Requiem in the house on Dammtorstrasse . In October 2007 he made his debut with the Hamburg Philharmonic .

Genz has performed at concerts, recitals and opera productions in Europe, Africa and the USA. He has recorded at festivals such as the Wiener Festwochen and the Lucerne Music Festival, the Festival in Aix-en-Provence, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Svyatoslaw Richter Festival in Moscow. The conductors under whom he has sung include Herbert Blomstedt , Philippe Herreweghe , Frans Brüggen , Marcus Creed , Ton Koopman , Sigiswald Kuijken , Sir Simon Rattle and Peter Schreier .

Genz is a soloist on recordings of numerous cantatas (among others under John Eliot Gardiner ) as well as the St. John Passion (under Ludwig Güttler ) by Bach, the symphony cantata Lobgesang by Mendelssohn Bartholdy (under Helmuth Rilling ) and the opera Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss (under Giuseppe Sinopoli ) .
