Ludwig Güttler , OBE (born June 13, 1943 in Sosa in the Ore Mountains ) is a German trumpeter and conductor . He is considered one of the world's leading trumpet virtuosos .

Life

After studying with Armin Männel at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music in Leipzig , the stations of his career between 1965 and 1990 were the Handel Festival Orchestra in Halle (Saale) (1965-1969), the Dresden Philharmonic (1969-1980) and the University of Music Carl Maria von Weber Dresden , where he held a full professorship for trumpet. He also taught at the annual International Music Seminar in Weimar .

Since the mid-1970s, Güttler has mainly been active as a soloist and later also as a conductor at home and abroad, mainly devoting himself to the trumpet literature of the 18th century: his special focus is the high-pitched piccolo trumpet for playing parts for the actual baroque trumpet . He was also involved in the development of a modern brass instrument that was intended to play parts for the historical corno da caccia . The instrument was made by the brass instrument maker Friedbert Syhre in Leipzig.

Güttler recorded numerous trumpet concerts together with the New Bachisches Collegium Musicum under Max Pommer , and he has also enjoyed successful collaboration and concert activities with his long-time organ and harpsichord partner Friedrich Kircheis . A large number of Güttler's recordings were made by Eterna , many in coproduction with “Capriccio”, then after 1990 by Berlin Classics and recently also by Carus .

Güttler founded the Leipzig Bach Collegium in 1976 , the brass ensemble Ludwig Güttler in 1978 and the Virtuosi Saxoniae chamber orchestra in 1985 , of which he is director. He is also musical director of the “Sandstone and Music” festival in Saxon Switzerland and the “ Hitzacker Music Week ”.

Güttler is a member of the Saxon Academy of the Arts .

Stasi charge

In 1992 Güttler was confronted with allegations in the press that he had been an unofficial employee of the State Security . Accordingly, he is said to have been recruited as IM "Friedrich" in September 1979 and to have been active for the State Security until January 1983. At the time, Güttler described the contents of the files found as falsified, since the meetings recorded there were not possible in terms of time or geography according to his own handwritten documents and also for the reason that he gave concerts that were open to the public at the times specified in the files. In addition, personal details in the files were incorrect. The public prosecutor dropped a criminal complaint he had filed. It was found that the files were created by the Stasi ("The paper was real."). The Leipzig Public Prosecutor's Office was unable to issue a judgment on the veracity of the events described in the files. According to the BStU , the 266-page file is “clearly documents relating to an unofficial employee”. From 1969 to 1989 Güttler was permanently monitored by the State Security through operational processes (OV) - including operational identity control (OPK). According to the BStU, the 5000-page file is “clearly a victim file”.
