Erich Iltgen (born July 10, 1940 in Cologne - † June 9, 2019 in Dresden ) was a German politician ( CDU ) and from 1990 to 2009 President of the Saxon State Parliament .

Life

Iltgen was born in Cologne . However, his family moved to Dresden in 1943 to flee the air war.

After training as an agricultural machinery and engine fitter from 1954 to 1957, Iltgen studied from 1958 to 1964 in Halle (Saale) with degrees as an engineer for agricultural technology and as a qualified engineer for heating, ventilation and plumbing . He was then from 1964 to 1979 as a group leader in power plant construction and from 1979 to 1985 as a department head for investments in the Saxon Serumwerk Dresden , until he was finally from 1985 to 1988 as head of the cathedral construction works of the cathedral of the Dresden-Meißen diocese and from 1988 to 1990 as building authority manager of the Diocese of Dresden-Meißen became active ( Ordinariatsrat ).

Erich Iltgen was a Roman Catholic, married and had four children.

Between 1989 and 1990 Iltgen was the moderator of the round table of the Dresden district , founder of the Saxon Forum, member of the coordination committee for the education of the state of Saxony and state structure officer of the working group "Landtag".

In June 1990 he joined the CDU . He was elected to the First Saxon State Parliament through constituency 42 (Dresden IV) and was elected President on October 27, 1990. In the following state elections in Saxony in 1994, 1999 and 2004 he was confirmed in office. In the 2nd and 3rd electoral term he represented constituency 45 (Dresden IV), in the fourth electoral term the constituency Dresden 6 . He was also a member of the presidium of the CDU regional association.

As President of the Landtag, he came under fire on May 9, 2007, when he silently allowed the xenophobic abuses of the NPD parliamentary group leader Holger Apfel to go through and only responded hours later with a call to order.

In the Saxon state elections in 2009 , he was no longer a candidate.

Honors

By virtue of his office, Iltgen was awarded the Saxon Order of Merit for life as President of the Landtag . Erich Iltgen was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with a Star in 2009 , which was presented to him at the farewell ceremony from the state parliament. On May 28, 2011 he was awarded the Saxon Constitutional Medal by his successor Matthias Rößler for “his outstanding political work and voluntary commitment” .

On June 21, 2019, Iltgen was honored with a state ceremony in the Saxon state parliament . He was the first person to receive this honor since the Free State of Saxony was founded in 1990.

Memberships

Erich Iltgen was a member of the Dresdner Kinderhilfe e. V. and on the board of trustees of the Lingnerschloss e. V. He also had several patrons. Iltgen was Honorary President of the State Tourism Association and the European Movement Saxony. Iltgen was a member of the board of trustees of the New Saxon Art Association , as its president from 1990 to 1991. From 1992 to 2010 he headed the nationwide round table against violence as a moderator.
