Peter Sadlo (born April 28, 1962 in Zirndorf ; † July 29, 2016 in Munich ) was a German drummer . He was one of the most outstanding European solo drummers and drum teachers.

Life

Peter Sadlo grew up in Zirndorf , where his talent was recognized at an early stage: in 1967 he began classical percussion training and at the age of twelve he received lessons as a guest student at what was then the Meistersinger Conservatory in Nuremberg .

He studied with Siegfried Fink at the University of Music in Würzburg . In 1982 he became principal timpanist with the Munich Philharmonic under Sergiu Celibidache , who had a lasting impact on him.

Only 21 years old, he took over a professorship for timpani and percussion at the University of Music and Theater in Munich in 1983 . In 1990 he was appointed professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg . After separating from the Munich Philharmonic in 1997, he mainly appeared as a solo percussionist, often with a chamber music line-up, for example with Gidon Kremer or the pianist Anna Gourari , but also with the percussion ensemble Nexus .

In addition to his concert activities, he also dealt with the possibilities of expanding the sound possibilities of the instrument, which was also the topic of his dissertation in 1997 in musicology at the University of Bucharest . Numerous contemporary composers - a literature specially composed for percussion has existed since the 20th century - composed works for Peter Sadlo, including Luciano Berio , Harald Genzmer , Sofia Asgatowna Gubaidulina , Moritz Eggert and Bertold Hummel . He was also active in the development of new instruments (e.g. timpani ) and created his own series of mallets.

In the successor to Gidon Kremer, he was artistic director of the Basel festival "Les muséiques", which has top-class chamber music from 2007 to 2010. In addition, since 2007 he has been the artistic advisor of the International Music Meeting Center Haus Marteau in the Upper Franconia district in Lichtenberg. There he has been giving masterclasses for drums since 1989 and was the founder of the concert series Haus Marteau auf Reisen .

Peter Sadlo died at the age of 54 as a result of kidney surgery in a Munich hospital.
