Wolfgang Schöne (born February 9, 1940 in Bad Gandersheim ) is a German opera singer with a bass-baritone voice .

Life

Schöne initially worked as a primary school teacher . From 1964 he studied singing at the Hanover Music Academy with the opera singer and singing teacher Naan Pöld . In 1968 Schöne switched to further training at the Hamburg University of Music , where Pöld had meanwhile become a professor. In 1969 Schöne passed his diploma as a concert singer and music teacher .

His debut as an opera singer took place in 1970 at the Eutin Festival with the role of Ottokar in the opera Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber . First guest engagements followed at the Lübeck City Theater , where he also sang Conte Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro in 1970 , and at the Wuppertal Opera House , where he took over the role of Wolfram von Eschenbach in Tannhäuser from Richard Wagner .

In 1973, after a successful guest appearance as Guglielmo in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Così fan tutte , Schöne was engaged at the Stuttgart State Theater , of which he was a permanent member until 2005. Since then, Schöne has been tied to the Stuttgart State Opera with a guest contract. In 1978 Schöne was appointed chamber singer . Since 2006 he has been an honorary member of the Stuttgart State Opera. From 1974 to 1993 Schöne also sang regularly at the Vienna State Opera . There he sang a total of 11 different roles, including Wolfram von Eschenbach, Conte Almaviva, Silvio in Der Bajazzo , Mandryka in Arabella by Richard Strauss and the title role in Eugen Onegin by Peter Tschaikowski .

Schöne also appeared regularly at the Salzburg Festival . There he sang the Conte Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro from 1985–1987 and 1990 , in 1988 in a concert performance of the opera Der Prozess von Gottfried von Eine and from 1988–1989 Alidoro in La Cenerentola by Gioacchino Rossini . With great success he embodied the role of Gyges in the opera Der König Kandaules by Alexander Zemlinsky under the musical direction of Kent Nagano in a production by Christine Mielitz in Salzburg in 2002 . In 2005 in Salzburg he took on the role of Podestà Ludovico Nardi in Die Gezeichen by Franz Schreker in a production by Nikolaus Lehnhoff . A recording of the performance was later released on DVD.

At the Semperoper in Dresden Schöne appeared as Barak in Richard Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten in 1999 and in the title role of Richard Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer in 2000 . In 2002 he made his role debut at the Hamburg State Opera as Hans Sachs in Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in a production by Peter Konwitschny and under the musical direction of Ingo Metzmacher . In 2003 he sang Moses in a new production of the opera Moses und Aron by Arnold Schönberg at the Stuttgart State Opera under the musical direction of Lothar Zagrosek and directed by Jossi Wieler .

In 2008 Schöne made his role debut as Scarpia in the opera Tosca by Giacomo Puccini at the Stuttgart State Opera . In 2009 Schöne impressed at the Dresden Semperoper with his "subtle creative and singing power" as "The Old Man" in the opera L'Upupa and the triumph of the love of sons by Hans Werner Henze .

Schöne appeared in several opera premieres, including 1976 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in Die Temptation by Josef Tal , 1980 in Stuttgart in Hamlet by Hermann Reutter , and 1983 at the Schwetzingen Festival in the role of Tom in Hans Werner Henze's opera Die English cat and in 1992 at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin as Josef K. in Das Schloss by Aribert Reimann .

Schöne had extensive guest contracts at home and abroad. Foreign guest performances have taken him to the Maggio Musicale in Florence , to the Glyndebourne Festival (1996 as Dr. Schön), to the Teatro La Fenice in Venice (2003/2004 as Amfortas), to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (2000 as Barak), and to the Opéra Bastille (1991 as speaker, 1998 as Dr. Schön).

At the beginning of his career, Schöne sang the lyric baritone subject in the operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Conte Almaviva, Guglielmo, Don Giovanni) and Richard Wagner (Wolfram, Heerrufer) as well as the lyric Italian opera subject. In later years major character roles such as music teacher in Ariadne auf Naxos , father in Hansel and Gretel , doctor Schön in Lulu and numerous roles in opera works by Hans Werner Henze were added. Finally, Wolfgang Schöne also took on the major roles for hero baritone , such as Holländer, Hans Sachs, Kurwenal in Tristan and Isolde , Wanderer / (Wotan) in Siegfried and Amfortas in Parsifal .

In addition to his work as an opera singer, Schöne also worked intensively as a concert singer. He sang cantatas , masses and the great sacred works of Johann Sebastian Bach , such as the Christmas Oratorio , the St. Matthew Passion and the St. John Passion . He has also interpreted works by Heinrich Schütz and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy several times .

Schöne was also considered to be a specialist in late Romantic works and for composers such as Gustav Mahler , Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Franz Schreker .
