Jossi Wieler

Jossi Wieler (born Josef Wieler on August 6, 1951 in Kreuzlingen ) is a Swiss theater director , opera director and artistic director .

Life

From 1972 to 1980 Wieler lived in Israel and studied directing at Tel Aviv University . From 1980 to 1982 he was an assistant at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf . He was in-house director at the Heidelberg Theater from 1983 to 1985, at the Basel Theater from 1988 to 1993, at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg from 1993 to 2000 and at the Münchner Kammerspiele from 2001 to 2010. He staged at the Stuttgart State Theaters , the Zurich Theater , at the Semperoper Dresden and at the Schaubühne Berlin.

From 2011 to 2018 Wieler was artistic director of the Stuttgart State Opera . He is a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts , the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the German Academy of Performing Arts .

Prizes and awards

Wieler received numerous awards. In 1986, 1994, 2002 and 2005 he was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen . In 1994 he was named director of the year in the critics' poll of Theater heute magazine . In 2002 and 2012, together with Sergio Morabito , he was elected Director of the Year in Opernwelt magazine's critics' survey . In 2002 he received the Konrad Wolf Prize . In 2005 he was awarded the German Critics' Prize. In 2006 and 2012 he received the German Theater Prize Der Faust together with Sergio Morabito . In 2009 he was awarded the Vienna Nestroy Theater Prize. In 2015 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Culture Prize. Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann awarded him the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg in 2016. In the same year, the Stuttgart State Opera was voted "Opera House of the Year" in its directorship in the critics' survey of the Opernwelt magazine.
