The whole truth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The full truth (Original title: The Truth ) is the twenty-fifth Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett from the year 2000. The setting is Ankh-Morpork. The full truth is one of the cultural stories and introduces the character William de Worde as the protagonist. He is the founder of the "Times", the city's first daily newspaper . In later novels, his first reporter, Sacharissa, will represent the free press more often than William. Problems of investigative journalism in uncovering a complicated conspiracy against Lord Vetinari give the freshly minted media professionals plenty of writing material. The Ankh Morpork City Guard only plays a minor role and is always described from William de Worde's reporter perspective. The official introduction of the printing press by Gunilla Gutenhügel nominally satirizes the historical Johannes Gutenberg .

action

Once again the old nobility Ankh-Morporks wants to get rid of the patrician Lord Vetinari . With the help of a doppelganger, his mental health is to be questioned. To do this, they engage the foreign criminal duo Mr. Nadel and Mr. Tulpe - the "New Company" - for this plan.

The chance collision between the professional writer William de Worde and the contract printer Gunilla Gutenhügel marked the birth of the Ankh-Morpork Times , the city's first newspaper. The dwarf Gunilla Gutenhügel has just come to town to take the difficult road to turning lead into gold. Up until that moment, the wizards in town had strictly forbidden printing. With the arbitrary designation of William de Worde as sole manager of the project, the printing receives official approval from the patrician on a trial basis.

William had previously made a living sending a news letter to prominent foreign personalities once a month for $ 5 each. Now he is faced with the problem of finding enough news each day to fill an issue of The Times. He quickly learns that what is in the newspaper counts as news. After organizing the sales logistics with the help of the Horrible Group , he hires more people to do research and write.

The incident in the palace, Vetinari's alleged knife attack on his secretary, represents the first serious test for the free press . During his research, William constantly clashes with the guard. It is said to be disrupting the investigation. The question of who he should justify his actions to is open and accusatory. After Wuffel, the patrician's dog, was searched for in the newspaper by picture, article and promise of reward, the New Company suddenly developed an extremely unpleasant interest in the Times . The public interest in the truth comes under complete pressure when a dubious rival newspaper, the Ankh-Morpork-Kurier, appears. The courier only spreads well-made news, but is financially strong and operates with brutal price dumping. Willam de Worde painfully learns that once it's published in a newspaper, people actually take anything at face value.

Ultimately, William actually finds out what happened in the palace. He publishes the truth, but not the full truth, because stupidly it turns out that his father, Lord de Worde, is the head of the gang of conspirators. He forcibly forces the old man to leave the city forever.
