The Sorcerer's Legacy (Original title: Equal Rites ) is a novel by Terry Pratchett from 1987. It is the third Discworld novel and the first in which Rincewind is not the protagonist. It was published in German by Heyne Verlag in 1989 ( ISBN 3-453-03451-1 ). The title of the original paraphrases the demand for equal rights.
The story introduces the character of Grandma Weatherwax in the Discworld , who will play an important role in several later novels. Eskarina Schmied, the second main character in this novel, disappears after this appearance and only reappears 23 Discworld years later in The Midnight Dress .
action
When it comes to magic, there is a clear gender segregation on Discworld: men become wizards and women become witches. After foreseeing his imminent death, the aged wizard Drum Billet traditionally bequeaths his wand to the eighth son of an eighth son. Unfortunately, it turns out that the newborn is a girl.
Esmeralda Wetterwax, the local witch, teaches Eskarina the witchcraft a few years later. However, she has to realize that the girl's magical talent is different and wants to be trained differently. She registers Eskarina for a place at the Invisible University in Ankh-Morpork and accompanies her. On the way there, Eskarina meets the shy, stuttering, pimply-faced Simon , who is a few years older than her and obviously a magical genius. Both want to go to university, but only Simon is accepted because girls are not allowed.
With cunning, trickery and the help of Esme Wetterwax, Eskarina and her wand finally find accommodation at the university, albeit initially as a housemaid. After rescuing Simon from the monstrous dimensions of the dungeon, Eskarina Schmied finally becomes an official student. She graduated as the first sorceress in the Discworld.
