Hollow Heads (original title: Feet of Clay ) is the nineteenth Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett from 1996. The setting is Ankh-Morpork. Hollow heads is one of the city watch stories, which is why Samuel Mumm is the protagonist. In addition to several murders accused of the golems, Lord Vetinari is the victim of insidious poisoning. For the first time, golems are introduced as an independent ethnic group and Dorfl is the first golem to be added to the watch at the end of the book.

The English title Feet of clay alludes to the interpretation of the dream of Nebuchadnezzar , the king of Babylon, by the prophet Daniel in the Book of Daniel .

action

Once again, a group of extremely traditionalist citizens is writing the re-establishment of a king on their flags. For this role, they chose Nobby Nobbs of all people . To get rid of the patrician , this time they try a creeping poisoning. While Vetinari quickly sees through this clever method, he lays down clues to put Commander Vimes on the right track. He receives support from the new recruit Grinsi "Gertie" Kleinpo, who, thanks to her atypical training in the alchemists' guild, opens the forensic department of the guard and contributes significantly to the clarification of Vetinari's poisoning.

Meanwhile, mysterious murders of harmless old men are taking place in Ankh-Morpork . It soon becomes clear that golems are involved. They were created by humans a long time ago to do dangerous and dirty jobs. They are mute creatures burned out of clay, in whose hollow heads “holy words” are deposited, which animate them. They don't think, they obey. A special golem doesn't. He thinks, speaks and murders. The other golems burned this golem from their own clay to improve their lives. However, they placed so many conflicting desires and expectations in his head that he went insane.

In the final battle, the village destroys the mad Golem King in a cauldron of boiling wax. In this dispute, Dorfl himself shatters into a thousand pieces, which Captain Carrot has all collected to let it burn again; this time with one mouth and one tongue. Then he puts the purchase receipt for Dorfl in his head and the first golem with free will is in the world. He speaks and decides to pursue a career in the guard in the future.
