action

The battle in the Koom valley , between dwarves and trolls, is a legendary, historical event - for both sides. Klonk , a board game in which 32 dwarfs compete against 8 trolls, is the symbolic reminder of the Koom Valley Battle on a cardboard square, but by no means the only one. Annually commemorations and parades are organized on this date. A serious historian would point out that this battle has been fought at least a dozen times in the last 1500 years, which should elicit a dry "So what !" From a history monk from Oi Dong Monastery .

Once again Koomtaltag is approaching and Ankh-Morpork is seething. In the last few months, a large group of deep - seated people , so-called grags , or the ultras among the dwarves, have come to town. Ham crusher , a particularly chauvinist dwarf populist , has heated the mood extremely for weeks. Now he's been murdered. Of course by a troll, as the dwarves claim, who in turn just as emphatically assert their innocence. The city is on the brink of civil war.

This is the situation with which Commander Vimes is confronted and which makes him ask loudly and clearly the question of the general validity of the law. How deep is the law of Ankh-Morpork? Who is in charge of this murder investigation? In the end Ham Crusher was killed very deep below the city, in a kind of mine that the Deeper had dug there. Against heavy resistance, Mumm visits the crime scene. Without realizing it, he encounters The Calling Darkness there - a fateful dwarf mine sign that symbolizes an angry thirst for revenge. From that point on, he wages a permanent guerrilla war against the temptation to meet this overwhelming need for revenge.

Regardless, he gets the dwarves to accept Captain Carrot as an investigator and puts Sergeant Angua , the guard's werewolf, and Corporal Sally , the freshly baked vampire recruit, by his side. It soon becomes clear that the dwarves are hiding something. Neither their statements about Schinkenbrecher's death are correct, nor are their explanations for the presence of the Tiefener and their busy digging activity.

In the course of the investigation, Mumm discovers the Klonk Academy of Mr. Schein , one of the extremely rare diamond trolls and, still uncrowned, the next king of the troll clans. In this multi-racial game library for advanced players, Mr. Schein gives the commanding officer crucial information about why the Grags are in town. He also hands him over brick , a drug addict troll youth who actually went to the dwarf tunnels on the night of the murder and could act as a witness.

While the guard's elite investigators are investigating the murder, it is almost forgotten that the congenial brain trust Colon-Nobbs is investigating a picture theft at the Royal Art Museum. The rascal , as the museum director loosely calls the 15-meter-long painting of the Koom Valley Battle, was cut out of the frame and stolen. If one can believe the popular book "The Koomtalkodex", Methodia Schlingel's only work hides a great secret.

After the Tiefener have four young city dwarfs who had taken over the ditch for them killed, and then fled the city have left also needs to Samuel Mumm with the secret deal. The Grags were looking for something related to Schlingel or his painting. After they found what they were looking for, tabula rasa was made to keep the secret. In the course of this action, three Tiefener broke into the family home on Teekuchenstrasse and tried to kill Lady Sybil and Sam junior . That fails, but if Samuel Vimes was already very angry before, he is now unleashed to catch the murderers. The calling darkness rejoices .

The rascal used to belong to the Käsedick household. Which is why Lady Sybil , in the course of a school project, made a 1: 5 scale copy of the picture, which of course waited in the attic for future use. Intensive study of pictures, deep reflection and the most exact questioning of the museum director finally brings Mumm on the trail of the secret of Schlingel's painting. It is a map that marks a specific place in the Koom Valley, accurate to the millennia. That's where the killer dwarves are on their way. If Mumm wants to catch her, a trip to the valley seems inevitable.

With the most discreet help from the magicians (the guard does not use magic! Basta!), Mumm and his eleven-headed entourage reach the edge of the Koom valley within a few hours. After an extremely arduous search, Mumm found the spot that shows the painting by Schlingel . A deep hole leads into the interior of the earth. Recklessly, but perhaps also manipulated by the calling darkness , the commander climbs into the shaft alone and falls. He ends up in an underground river and is washed away unconscious. When he comes to, he is disoriented and mechanically trudges through countless caves upstream until he hears the noise of a large group of people. He has the Tiefener found that are about to destroy the treasure of Koomtals. Mumm snapped completely out, overwhelmed several dwarf guard and is in the process one of the old Grags to send to the afterlife when he stops. What he's up to doesn't feel right. In the meantime, his companions from the other direction have also encountered the Deeper and not just them. The cave becomes full, a contingent of 60 soldiers from the Lower King occupies the location and takes all those involved into custody.

While he is waiting for the arrival of the Lower King , Vimes finally has the opportunity to see what is actually hidden here in the cave. She is sitting full of petrified trolls and dwarfs, back to back, each Klonk play. Most prominent are the leaders of the petrified, B'hrian blood ax the king of the dwarves and diamond , the king of the trolls. To turn this mausoleum into a real multimedia event, the cube that the Grags dug up in Ankh-Morpork is used; - a kind of very robust iPod. He speaks, with the voices of the two dead rulers, whose legacy is unambiguously the PEACE! explained between dwarves and trolls.

The discovery of the royal cave and the speaking cube fundamentally changes the relationship between the two species . It is imperative to protect the common heritage of the cave. The volatility of the Koomtals due are dwarves and trolls now forced to permanent and intensive cooperation. The Koomtaltag takes on a completely new meaning.
