Flying scraps

Fliegende Fetzen (original title: Jingo ) is the twenty-first discworld novel by Terry Pratchett from 1997. It was published in German in 1999 by Goldmann Verlag ( ISBN 3-442-41625-6 ). The locations are ankh-morpork and gossip . Flying scraps is one of the city guard stories, which is why Commander Mumm and the rest of the guard crew play the prominent roles in preventing war. The emergence of a sunken island between rival nations Morpork and Gossip sets this tale of war and warmongers, Lawrence of Arabia and desert peoples in motion.

action

An island appears in the Round Sea exactly between the desert state of Klatsch and the city-state of Ankh-Morpork . Even the discoverers, two fishermen from Ankh-Morpork and Klatsch, found themselves in the wool within a very short time. It soon becomes clear that this is not the first time this island has appeared and that it was christened “Leshp” in the past.

The expansive state policy of gossip paired with the deep-seated chauvinism of certain circles in Ankh-Morpork let the mood quickly boil. The assassination of the brother of the reigning Gossip prince brings the barrel to overflow. War is declared and the Military Council under Lord Rust takes command. Important members of the guard hand in their badges, the patrician literally goes underground and investigates the causes of the island phenomenon with a submarine developed by Leonard von Quirm .

Commander Mumm , obviously annoyed by the whole development, also puts together a regiment as a knight, which, as if by chance, consists of the former members of the city guard. His hunt for the alleged assassin leads him and his troops abruptly to gossip, where he is seen as the head of the invading army. With the help of 71-hour Ahmed, the prince's personal policeman, Mumm ultimately arrested both warring armies and their commanders-in-chief. At this critical moment the patrician reappears and declares the unconditional surrender of the Morporkian forces. This agreement is to be ratified on the island of Leshp within four days. The gossips agree, but Lord Rust charges Vetinari with high treason on his return, and Mumm is forced to handcuff him. On the day of the trial, however, the island of Leshp sank back into the sea. No bone of contention, no surrender, no high treason, all tension dissolves into pleasure. The gossip prince, however, is chased away by the gossipers and replaced by his brother.

Others

In fact, there was a similar island phenomenon on the Round World. In 1831 the island of Ferdinandea appeared off Sicily and became a point of contention for several states. After a while it also disappeared again into the sea.
