A hat full of stars (English title: A Hat Full of Sky ) is a fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett . It is the thirty-second Discworld novel. A hat full of stars was published in 2004 and won the Locus Award in 2005. The action takes place in Lancre . A hat full of stars is one of the witch stories, with Grandma Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg only playing supporting roles. The main burden of the story rests on the meanwhile eleven year old Tiffany Weh, who has to painfully realize that even in her basically friendly nature there are quite unsympathetic traits hidden.

A hat full of stars is the third novel subtitled "A Tale of Discworld". There are three more novels that accompany Tiffany Weh's growing up and her training as a witch: The Winter Blacksmith , The Midnight Dress and The Shepherd's Crown . A hat full of stars is an evolutionary novel that shows how the protagonist, on the threshold of puberty, grows in the increasingly complex reality as a person.

action

A hat full of stars is the sequel to Little Free Men and tells the story of the first year of apprenticeship of Tiffany Weh , the witch from the chalk land . She is now eleven years old, and it is time for her to take up the promised training position with the witches in the Spitzhorn Mountains. She says goodbye to her family, we-are-the-greatest! and Weh the late grandma and promises to come back as soon as possible. Miss Tick , the witch seeker, then takes her to Zweihemden , a town with a stagecoach connection. But instead of getting into the carriage, Tiffany switches to the witch's broom, which is controlled by her future instructor, Mrs. Level. She learns very quickly that she hates flying.

Tiffany is too inexperienced and Miss Tick too self-centered to notice that in two-shirts they have faced a serious threat to their mental integrity . The gifts slumbering in the young witch have attracted an ancient, dangerous entity that roams the universe immortal and immortal, always looking for new hosts: a hawker . The we-are-the-greatest! but, who never let Tiffany out of their sight, followed the attack very closely. Even if this attack failed and her Big Little Witch is far away now, Rob Anybody , the Big Man of the clan, is really worried. No living creature has ever survived occupation by a hawker, and a hawker who once fixated on a victim never left him.

In the mountains, Tiffany begins her witch training with Mrs. Level , who is actually two women, a soul with two bodies, so to speak, which is sometimes quite practical. She learns that witchcraft is mostly very boring and dirty work. Witches learn to know what they are doing. In her rare spare time, Tiffany meets up with other witch accessories. Clearly this little circle is under the tutelage of Annagramma , the snooty student still hochnäsigeren woman catchy . Annagramma cannot and does not want to take Tiffany fully. She is just the newbie, wears green clothes instead of black and when she claims to have got an invisible witch hat from Mrs. Weatherwax, she is thoroughly laughed at.

Tiffany is beside herself, in the truest sense of the word, and the enthusiast uses this moment to settle into her. Only a tiny place in her consciousness has remained of the real Tiffany , from which she desperately sends out calls for help and which the enthusiast tries with all his might to conquer. In the millions of years of his existence, the enthusiast has amassed an infinite amount of knowledge that is now available to Tiffany. Suddenly she has tremendous power, which she demonstrates during a visit to Annagramma , forcing her to become her friend. The two go on a shopping tour at Zakzak , the dwarf who has everything for the modern witch on offer. Because of a minor disagreement, Zakzak calls his wizard, Brian , to throw Tiffany out of the store. The enthusiast turns him into a miserably croaking frog in no time at all , whereupon Zakzak is extremely open to all of Tiffany's “suggestions” .

Back at her instructor's, the enthusiast murders one of the two Ms Grads, which gives Tiffany the opportunity to fight for her body again. She falls into a coma over it, what the- we-are-the-greatest! , who have meanwhile also arrived in the mountains, gives the opportunity to inspect the badly battered consciousness of their Great Little Witch . Tiffany signals to them that three things could help save them: sheep's wool , turpentine and Happy Sailor Tobacco . Together this creates the smell of granny ache , which may generate enough strength to drive the hawker away.

In fact, this plan succeeds. Grandma Weatherwax , alarmed by the loud use of powerful magic, makes sure that the completely confused spirit of Tiffany , in which memories of the enthusiast are still wandering, finds itself again. She lets Tiffany work and make amends for some of the mischief the hawker has wrought.

After she has become herself again, Tiffany realizes that the hawker is still lurking around her, waiting for his next chance. A final solution is needed. She consults with Grandma Weatherwax , and both agree that the annual witch's competition is the right time and place to put an end to the hawk. Neither of them have the slightest idea how to do this in practice, but they are nevertheless confident. At the competition, Tiffany then deliberately invites the enthusiast to invade her mind. She gets to know a very frightened being, whom she first gives a name: Arthur . Now she fulfills Arthur's most ardent wish, whereupon the enthusiast actually disappears for ever and ever. Then Grandma Weatherwax brings Tiffany back from the place she brought the hawker. They then drink a cup of tea together and enjoy the ongoing competition that Petulia wins with her “pig trick”.
