action

Because Gevatter Tod began to be interested in the fate of those whom he only has to pick up motionless and neutrally after their death, his clients, the auditors , conspire against him. Thereupon they retire Death and he himself becomes mortal. He uses his remaining time to finally find out what it means to have time and possibly to waste it. In a small village he hires out as a servant and works under the pseudonym "Bill Tür" for widow Flinkwert. In doing so, he gains deep insights into the life, thinking and humor of the people, which ultimately even earned him the honorary title Good Old Bill in the village pub .

However, the absence of death shows unpleasant side effects. The life energy of all deceased builds up and begins to penetrate the world of the inanimate. Trousers run away from their owners, sofas become self-employed, nails and screws refuse to work and, last but not least, a transdimensional city parasite, in the form of an American shopping mall , is trying to establish itself in Ankh-Morpork. These difficulties all stick to the recently deceased magician Windle Poons . Since death apparently does not want to pick him up, he returns to his 130-year-old body and reluctantly becomes a zombie. With an indecisive group of neurotic undead , he puts an end to the parasitic ghost.

Meanwhile, Death is preparing to meet his successor. After witnessing his proud vanity, he no longer thinks of leaving the field without a fight and goes into the last stand with his undead self-help group.
