After Duke Felmet murders his cousin, the King of Lancre , a loyal servant flees with his newborn son. He manages to hand the child into the hands of the witches Esme Wetterwax , Gytha Ogg and Magrat Garlic before his captors kill him. The witches hide the child and the crown from a troop of traveling actors. After it turns out that the new ruler treats the country badly and does not even respect the witches, they decide to bring the rightful king to the throne. To do this, Grandma Wetterwax catapults Lancre 15 years into the future so that the prince reaches the required age.

Meanwhile, the new king tries to convince the people of the legitimacy of his rule and the wickedness of the witches. He commissions a play from the theater company that occupies the heir to the throne. During the performance, the witches manipulate the actors into playing a scene depicting the murder of the old king. In the tumult that followed, Lord Felmet went crazy and jumped off the castle wall. The witches are now trying to appoint the son as king. However, he renounces the royal dignity because he has found his personal fulfillment on stage. Finally, the court jester is exposed as the secret, illegitimate son of the king and biological brother of the acting heir to the throne and is crowned the new king.
