Terry Pratchett (2012)

Sir Terence David John Pratchett , OBE (*  28. April 1948 in Beaconsfield , Buckinghamshire , † 12. March 2015 in Broad Chalke , Wiltshire ) was a British Fantasy - writer . His most famous works are his Discworld novels , which have been translated into 37 languages. Around 85 million of his books have been sold worldwide.

Life

Terry Pratchett's coat of arms , issued by the College of Arms , with the motto Noli timere messorem (“Don't fear the Grim Reaper”).

Terry Pratchett published his first work when he was 13 years old. It was the short story The Hades Business , which was first published in the school newspaper and later in Science Fantasy Magazine .

After leaving school in 1965, Pratchett began training as a journalist with a local newspaper that same year. During his work as a journalist, in an interview with Peter Bander van Duren, a director of a small publishing house, he mentioned that he had also written a novel: The Carpet Peoples .

Pratchett was married to Lyn Marian Purves since 1968; her daughter Rhianna (* 1976) is also a writer.

In 1980 Pratchett became press spokesman for the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). The CEGB was a state-owned company in Great Britain that regulated the distribution of electricity production across different generation methods. When it became clear that he could make a living from his books, Pratchett quit his work at the CEGB in 1987 and published about two novels a year from then on. In 2003 he was the most successful author in Great Britain after Joanne K. Rowling .

In December 2007, Pratchett announced that he had been diagnosed with a very rare, early-onset form of Alzheimer's disease . Pratchett spoke about the disease on March 13, 2008 in an interview on the BBC radio program Today Program . According to his own statement, he has given up his driver's license and has had difficulty typing, which is why he has been writing his texts with the help of speech recognition software ever since. Pratchett donated a million dollars to the Alzheimer Research Trust and criticized the fact that too little funds are allocated to research into dementias. "I would eat the bum of a dead mole if that helped," he said. In this context he also spoke out in favor of euthanasia . Pratchett led a campaign against the euthanasia ban in Britain. He produced a BBC documentary in which he accompanied two people to suicide in Switzerland. Neil Gaiman said during a lecture that Pratchett had pills for suicide in his vault, so that if in doubt he could have decided for himself when he would die.

In 1998 Pratchett was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). On 18 February 2009 he was honored for his services to literature from the Queen to Knight Bachelor beaten and allowed to since Sir Terry Pratchett call. On April 28, 2010 it was given its own coat of arms by the Clarenceux King of Arms . This includes an ankh and a Morpork owl , which are taken from the coat of arms of the city of Ankh-Morpork, the scene of many of his works, and the motto "Noli timere Messorem" ("Don't fear the Grim Reaper", an allusion to the song (Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult and to the sympathetic nature of the character "Death", who plays a leading role in many disc world novels). In 2004 he received the Locus Award for the first time , and in 2011 the Karl Edward Wagner Special Award . In 2011 he also received the American Library Association's Margaret A. Edwards Award for Great Service in Youth Literature.

Pratchett died on March 12, 2015, at the age of 66 on his estate in Broad Chalke, Wiltshire, of posterior cortical atrophy (PKA, also known as Benson's syndrome), a neurodegenerative disease very similar to Alzheimer's disease.

One of his fans responded to the news of his death with a petition on Change.org demanding that the death return Terry Pratchett. It was signed by over 25,000 fans within two days. Operators of various Internet servers add additional header lines to the outgoing data of their servers to commemorate Pratchett - and based on a form of commemoration presented in Ab die Post .

Literary

Besides Pratchett's very own style of writing, in particular by its genreunüblichen in the fantasy literature Humor through to persiflage , some of his books are characterized by the exuberant partly using footnotes from. The Dutch translation of Good Omens , which Pratchett co-authored with Neil Gaiman , begins with an ironic preface by the translator in which he assures that no additional footnotes have been included to clear up any ambiguity - supplemented with footnotes to clarify Omen and Crowley.

With a few exceptions, Pratchett's works are not divided into chapters. In an interview he justified this with the fact that life also usually does not take place in chapters and, apart from their use in children's books, he could not see any purpose of chapters. Accordingly, Pratchett's youth books in particular contain chapters, but also the novels about the character Feucht von Lipwig. Here, however, they fulfill a function that goes beyond the mere structure of the text: Each chapter begins with a whole series of headings that anticipate parts of the content and can thus evoke certain expectations.

Pratchett's books find an echo that is rather unusual for this genre. A collection of essays on his work can be found in Terry Pratchett: Guilty of Literature , edited by Andrew M. Butler, Edward James, and Farah Mendlesohn ; a German study, "The Turtle Moves!" by Johannes Rüster, deals with cosmological and theological questions in the disc world novels. Two other books are worth noting, both compiled by David Langford , namely The Unseen University Challenge and The Wyrdest Link .

Discworld novels

Autograph with personal dedication

Terry Pratchett owed his worldwide fame and large fan base to his Discworld novels , which appeared in 1983 . The stories in this series of novels are set on the “disc world”, which is flat and carried by four elephants, which in turn stand on the back of a giant turtle that is “rowing” through space.

The Discworld stories are not just classic fantasy novels set in a fictional world - they parody classic fantasy and science fiction motifs as well as everyday life themes such as rock 'n' Roll , films, press credibility, religion, philosophy, economics, Chinese and Egyptian history, politics (e.g. forms of government), war and much more.

Well-preserved first editions of Pratchett's early disc world novels are very valuable within the fan base: The hardcover first edition of The Color of Magic is currently  worth more than £ 2000. A total of 4500 copies were printed, 506 of which were sold in the UK. The Light Fantastic is priced at £ 1000-1500. Josh Kirby designed the covers of all disc world novels sold in the UK up to 2001 . After Kirby's death, Paul Kidby , who had previously done Discworld illustrations, took over the cover design of the British editions. Some of the cover designs with color variations were also used for the German-language editions.

Pratchett was often respectfully called Pterry in his fan circle , a tribute to the silent P of the characters (such as Pteppic ) in the novel Pyramiden , which in turn alludes to Ptolemaios , the Greek name of various Hellenistic pharaohs, and on top of that a link (of the initial) his surname with his first name.

Pratchett had a keen interest in orangutans . This was not limited to the striking figure of the librarian in his Discworld novels, one of his most popular characters. He also worked for the Orangutan Foundation , for example visiting Borneo with a Channel 4 film crew to shoot an episode of Jungle Quest that shows orangutans in their natural habitat. Following Pratchett's good example, fan events such as the Discworld Convention have made the Orangutan Foundation their concern. Whenever Pratchett attended such meetings, there was always an auction at which fans could bid for their name in the next disc world novel. All proceeds went directly to the Orangutan Foundation.
