The Bonn Theater , also known as the Theater of the Federal City of Bonn, is the umbrella organization for the theater and opera establishments in the city of Bonn . It ascribes the areas “Opera - Drama - Dance” to itself. Bernhard Helmich has been General Director since August 2013 .

The Bonn Theater includes the Bonn Opera , the drama with the Schauspielhaus in Bad Godesberg and the Beuel theater as well as, until the 2007/2008 season, the Choreographic Theater, which was most recently directed by Johann Kresnik . Since then, the Theater Bonn no longer has its own dance division.

history

Bonn's theater history goes back to the time of the electors . In 1639 the Minorites ran a school theater , from 1673 to 1774 the Jesuits ran one . At the end of the 17th century, the time of court theater began in the electoral palace , which continued to develop under Elector Clemens August with French and Italian actors.

In the middle of the 18th century, a middle-class amateur theater was established, which worked together with the court theater. Gustav Friedrich Großmann directed this national theater from 1778 to 1784 and staged the world premiere of Fiesko on July 20, 1783 . The entry of French troops into the areas on the left bank of the Rhine of the Electorate of Cologne in 1794 brought the end of the court theater, which was filled in.

In 1826 art-loving citizens built the first playhouse themselves. In 1848 a new building was built on Wilhelmsplatz, which was taken over by the city in 1859 and played by Cologne. From 1902 the drama and from 1935 the opera had its own ensemble. After the theater was destroyed by a bombing on October 18, 1944, the magnificent building of the Bonn Citizens' Association built in 1909 on the corner of Poppelsdorfer Allee and Kronprinzenstraße (today Prinz-Albert-Straße) was used after the war , until 1965 a new building on the banks of the Rhine near the Kennedy Bridge , today's opera house . Under director Karl Pempelfort , the house devoted itself particularly to the works of William Shakespeare , which was continued under his successor Hans-Joachim Heyse (1970 to 1981). Artistic director Claude Riber upgraded the opera with international stars, while the drama under drama director Peter Eschberg turned to contemporary Austrian authors.

In 1986 the separation of opera and drama was carried out with two directorships. On August 1, 1997, the reunification took place under the general manager Manfred Beilharz , who had become theater manager in 1991.

As such, he founded the Bonn Biennale Festival - New Pieces from Europe in 1992 with the playwright Tankred Dorst . The festival, which takes place every two years, was a platform for new European drama. Country portraits were then presented under the successor in office from 2003, Klaus Weise : USA (2004), India (2006) and Turkey (2008). The only international theater festival in North Rhine-Westphalia was mainly funded by the federal government for cultural compensation projects in the Bonn region. After the end of the Bonn-Berlin balance in 2008, the city of Bonn was unable to raise the Biennale budget of 1.1 million euros on its own. A follow -up festival to the founders of the Bonn Biennale has been taking place in the Rhine-Main region since 2004 under the name New Pieces from Europe .
