The Halle Beuel (also Beuel theater ) is a former factory ensemble consisting of several buildings in the Beuel-Ost district of Bonn , which has been used by the city of Bonn for cultural purposes since the 1980s. The former jute spinning and weaving mill in Beuel is a listed building and is operated by the umbrella organization Theater Bonn . The eponymous theater hall has been used since autumn 2016 by the Bonn Pantheon Theater , a cabaret and music theater that was previously located in the Bonn Center on Bundeskanzlerplatz for almost 30 years .

history

The factory, which was founded in 1868 and initially manufactured jute products and later floor coverings, ceased production in 1980 after multiple changes of ownership. The facility at Siegburger Strasse 42 was then taken over by the city of Bonn in order to enable the city's cultural venues to be reorganized.

Until then, the drama department only had the stage of the Bad Godesberg drama and the workshop stage at Boeselagerhof 1 (near the opera). General director Jean-Claude Riber and the acting director Peter Eschberg, who was appointed in 1981, pushed the reorganization energetically and at high cost from 1981 onwards. The main venues were now to be the opera house , the Kammerspiele and the halls to be converted in Beuel. In these, experimental theater should take place in variable hall dimensions. A factory building was rebuilt in such a way that two different sized venues with 160 to 400 seats were created, which could also be merged into one large venue. The stage space could be completely rebuilt for any staging; Pieces then had to be played en suite . In addition, theater workshops (for drama and opera) as well as smaller stages for Bonn drama (“Alter Malersaal”, “Lampenlager”) were to be built.

The renovation work lasted until 1983, and in 1982 the first rehearsals took place in the “Old Painters Hall” (approx. 150 seats, later mainly used for children's and youth operas). After a fire in the Bonn opera house in 1984 and the temporary suspension of theater operations there, the Beuel hall was used as an alternative. On September 3, the theater workshops (costume tailoring, scenery and make-up) in Beuel were opened at the same time as the 125th anniversary of the Bonn city theater by Jango Edwards and Ulrich Wickert . On October 5, 1984, the Beuel hall was put into operation as a regular theater venue. In addition to stages and workshops, the old factory buildings housed administrative offices, the set and props stores, costume stocks and rehearsal stages.

The area is also used by the Beuel fire fighting unit of the Bonn volunteer fire brigade . She has maintained a fire station and office there since 1986 .

Even after the organizational separation of opera and drama in 1985 as well as when they were reunited in 1997/98 to form the theater of the federal capital Bonn under Manfred Beilharz , the use of the Halle Beuel remained. Around 80 events took place each year.

Transfer to the Pantheon Theater

After the decision was made to demolish the Bonn Center , a new venue for the privately operated Pantheon Theater, previously located in the basement of the Bonn Center, was sought. The use of the Kammerspiele Bad Godesberg or the studio in the Beethovenhalle , as proposed by the city, was rejected by the theater's operators.

As part of efforts to make savings in the city's cultural budget, the city administration and Pantheon operators decided to relocate the venues: the activities of the drama were to be relocated from the Beuel Hall to the Bad Godesberg Theater, and the vacated Beuel Hall to become the new home of the Pantheon Theater. The city wanted to finance the necessary renovation of Halle Beuel (ventilation, sprinkler system and noise protection); the required around 1.5 million euros should be repaid through a long-term lease with the Pantheon. The Pantheon wanted to invest another 300,000 euros in the interior with technology, stages and a spectator gallery. The Culture and Finance Committee of the City of Bonn stated in an intergroup declaration that this solution would allow the Kammerspiele in Bad Godesberg, which are threatened with closure, to be preserved. The renovation should take place in June 2016 and the cabaret move in autumn 2016.

Due to delays in the start of the renovation and because of controversial contract content, cabaret director Rainer Pause terminated negotiations with the city on July 4th. The administration threw the pantheonics stick between the legs and delayed the planned start in November. In particular, the late completion of the catering facilities causes existential problems. As a result, Bonn's Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan took over the negotiations directly and was able to reach an agreement. On August 30, 2016, the contract was signed by him, General Director Bernhard Helmich and Pause. Thereafter, the Pantheon will rent the Halle Beuel for 30 years until October 31, 2046.

"I am glad that we came to a mutually acceptable result and that we can keep the flagship for high-quality cabaret and music theater here, which has been inextricably linked to Bonn for almost 30 years."

- Ashok Sridharan, August 30, 2016

Two event halls were to be built in the approximately 1100 square meter factory hall. In front of the large 170 square meter stage that has been created so far, there is space for almost 450 spectators, 150 of them on the multi-level rear gallery. It thus significantly exceeds the previous capacities in the Bonn Center. A smaller hall (150–250 seats) will initially be created by partitioning it with curtains. The final completion of the conversion as a Pantheon venue was planned for 2018. In January 2018, however, the management of the Pantheon Theater announced that they no longer wanted to carry out the renovation project.

The planned premiere event with Gerd Dudenhöffer on October 26, 2016 had to be canceled due to technical problems. The inauguration of the theater took place the following day with a performance by Dave Davis .

The Schauspiel Bonn said goodbye to the Halle Beuel on July 1, 2016 with a big party with the hit pop duo Xiroi . From the 2016/17 season, the events previously held in Beuel will be continued in the Kammerspiele Bad Godesberg. For the first time, a piece by the Halle Beuel makers was given in Bad Godesberg in mid-October with the world premiere of Love you, Dragonfly by Fritz Kater .
