Ulrich Wickert
Ulrich Wickert (born December 2, 1942 in Tokyo ) is a German journalist and author .
Life
Childhood, youth and education
Wickert was born in Tokyo when his father Erwin Wickert was broadcast attaché to the German embassy there. Wickert spent his childhood from 1947 to 1956 in Heidelberg, where he attended the Mönchhofschule primary school , then the English Institute and later the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium , then until 1959 in Paris , where the family joined German NATO because of his father's professional obligations -Representation lived. At the age of 14, Wickert published his first journalistic article in the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung in 1956 with a report on the Eiffel Tower . Because of a prank he played on the pastor, he was thrown out of confirmation class at the age of 14. In 1961 he graduated from the Urspring School near Schelklingen .
In 1961 he began to study political science and law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . He went to Wesleyan University in Middletown (Connecticut) , USA , on a 1962 Fulbright scholarship . After his return to Bonn, he campaigned for the university rector Hugo Moser's Nazi past to be publicly discussed at the university. He passed his first state examination in law in 1968, after which he worked as a freelance radio author for ARD .
Career
As a television journalist
From 1969 to 1977 Wickert worked as editor of the program Monitor and was sent by WDR from 1969 to 1978 to every presidential election in Paris. In 1977 he went to Washington, DC as a correspondent for ARD , and in 1978 Wickert took a position in the ARD's France studio. In 1981 he founded the journalists' discussion group for open radio , in the same year he took over the management of the ARD studio in New York . In 1984, Wickert became head of the ARD studio in Paris. That year he shot a well-known report about the best way to cross the Place de la Concorde in Paris : In a self-experiment, he crossed the busy square without looking at the cars. Thus, the French drivers could not assume that he was taking care of himself and were therefore forced to adapt their driving style.
With effect from July 1, 1991 he became, according to the wishes of his predecessor Hanns Joachim Friedrichs, “First Moderator” of the ARD news program Tagesthemen , which he moderated until August 31, 2006 in weekly alternation with Sabine Christiansen , later Gabi Bauer and finally Anne Will . His trademark in the program was the farewell greeting "... a pleasant evening and a good night's sleep", with which he ended the program with a few exceptions. Normally, he followed a reference to the night edition of the Tagesschau with the phrase “You will be informed about the current state of affairs ...”. His successor at the tagesthemen was Tom Buhrow .
In his work as moderator of the Tagesthemen, Wickert made headlines in the autumn of 2001 when he quoted the Indian writer Arundhati Roy in the magazine MAX after an article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that US President George W. Bush compared with terrorist leader Osama bin Laden . Although Wickert attempted an interpretation of this statement only very cautiously, there was massive criticism , especially in the tabloid press . In particular, Bild accused the moderator of "insulting the president" and " anti-Americanism ". After he publicly apologized, the ARD declared the matter closed and ended the media debate about a possible termination.
From August 17, 2006 to May 20, 2007 he moderated the 30-minute literature show Wickert's books on ARD . From March 2007 to July 2014 he presented the program “Wickerts Bücher” on the first Sunday of the month at 1 p.m. in NDR-Kultur.
Outside the ARD
In the 2004/05 winter semester he became an honorary professor at the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences in Magdeburg . He worked there until 2015 in the journalism / media management course.
In November 2005 he was appointed Officer of the Legion of Honor for his services to Franco-German relations .
Since February 2008 he has been co-editor and columnist of the news portal zoomer.de , which was closed again on February 28, 2009 for economic reasons.
He is also the owner of the production company UWP. In 2008, Wickert applied with UWP for a third-party broadcasting license with RTL Television . After the award procedure against the company dctp of Alexander Kluge was inferior, he sued the Lower Saxony State Media Authority (NLM). After his urgent application against NLM was rejected in September 2008 before the Hanover Administrative Court, he withdrew the action in October 2008.
As an author, Wickert has published numerous books since 1981. "Reading and writing are part of our lives like eating and drinking with other people", quoted Hans Leyendecker Wickert about his father's role model in the Süddeutsche Zeitung: "When I came home at noon, my father sat in the armchair and wrote on a fancy Olivetti ." Most recently, he presented a number of crime novels set in France.
In 2016, Wickert was a Heinrich Heine visiting professor at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . In January and April he gave three lectures on “Freedom and Journalism” (January 27), “Power and Responsibility of the Media” (April 13) and “From the Life of a Journalist” (April 27).
Private life
Wickert is the brother of the writer and painter Wolfram Wickert and the uncle of the actress Emily Wood .
From 1972 to 1980 Wickert was a member of the SPD .
From his first marriage (1969–1995) to Sylvie von Frankenberg , he has a daughter born in 1969. His second marriage (1997–1998) to the journalist and television presenter Birgit Schanzen remained childless. Wickert has been married to Julia Jäkel for the third time since 2003 , who is Chief Executive Officer of Gruner + Jahr in Hamburg. He has twins with her (* 2012).
