biography

Tom Buhrow grew up in Siegburg and attended the Anno-Gymnasium there . From 1974 to 1976 he was an exchange student at a high school in the US state of Wisconsin . After graduating from high school in 1978, he worked for the Siegburg local editorial team of the Bonner General-Anzeiger and studied history , political science and regional studies at the University of Bonn . After graduating in 1984 ( MA ), he began an internship at WDR in 1985 . From 1986 he was editor , reporter and head of duty at the current hour and West 3 Aktuell, from 1992 editor and reporter at the Tagesschau .

In 1992/93 Tom Buhrow became a television correspondent at the ARD studio in Washington.

From January 2000 to January 2002 he worked as a television correspondent in the ARD studio in Paris , which he later took over. From February 1, 2002, his successor was Marion von Haaren . From July 1, 2002, he was director and television boss of the ARD studio in Washington .

On September 1, 2006, he succeeded Ulrich Wickert as moderator for the daily topics . He often ended the program with the words: “Those were the topics of the day today. Tomorrow is a new day."

For the radio station SWR3 he was heard in the series Tim asks Tom . There he explains complex facts from the topics of the day to "little Tim" in simple words on the phone.

In a guest appearance in the Kiel crime scene Borowski and the Free Fall (episode 846, first broadcast on October 14, 2012) Tom Buhrow played himself as the presenter of the day's topics.

On May 29, 2013, Tom Buhrow was elected director of West German Broadcasting. He received 41 of the 47 votes of the Broadcasting Council and on July 1, 2013, succeeded Monika Piel, who resigned for health reasons . He moderated his last edition of the Tagesthemen on June 16, 2013. The successor for the Tagesthemen was the television journalist Thomas Roth .

Memberships and functions

Buhrow is a member of the board and has been chairman of the supervisory board of Bavaria Film GmbH since February 1, 2015. He is also a member of the supervisory board of the ARD film subsidiary Degeto, the WDR Mediagroup and the ARD rights agency SportA and is deputy chairman of the board of directors of Deutschlandradio. He is the curator of the Civis Media Foundation and partner at Arte Germany and has a seat in the general assembly of Arte GEIE. In the 2013/2014 annual report of Atlantik-Brücke , he is mentioned as the keynote speaker for the outgoing US ambassador Murphy .

Controversy

In 2015, Tom Buhrow was criticized for the planned sale of parts of the WDR art collection .

In June 2009, the NDR media magazine "Zapp" reported on the additional income of TV presenters. Tom Buhrow's extensive and well-paid sideline activity as a speaker was also discussed. The magazine raised the question of whether journalists employed on public television can report independently when marketing their services as paid speakers. Der Spiegel reported on June 10, 2009 that senior editors of the ARD-aktuell editors wrote a letter asking the newsman to better examine future part-time jobs to see whether they could damage the reputation of the "Tagesthemen" and ARD-aktuell.

At the beginning of 2020, Buhrow came under fire because of an apology for a satirical video produced by WDR and the approval of its deletion. A children's choir sang the well-known nursery rhyme " My grandma drives a motorcycle in the chicken coop ", in which the text was changed and included lines like: "My grandma is an old environmental pig". After a " shitstorm " on the net, largely led by various right-wing movements, program managers arranged for the video to be deleted, which Buhrow approved. Buhrow publicly apologized for the satire after North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Armin Laschet joined the criticism of the satire video. At the beginning of January 2020, the WDR editorial team criticized the deletion of the satirical video as a “blatant violation of freedom of broadcasting ”. TV writers from several broadcasters followed this criticism. Buhrow commented on this in an extraordinary editorial meeting of the WDR on January 7, 2020. He explained that he had to react to the protest of the WDR regular audience. There was also a lot of support for Buhrow's apology, for example from Andreas Meyer-Lauber, the chairman of the Broadcasting Council.

Buhrow's salary of around 399,000 euros was critically questioned several times. In 2018, the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung asked whether his salary could be reduced, as it was 100,000 euros above the salary of Chancellor Merkel. In 2020, Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff criticized Buhrow's salary as too high and demanded that Buhrow's salary be adjusted to the remuneration of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of around 214,000 euros.
