Publications

In his second publication on Russia, Russia. The true face of a world power (2008), according to Ulrike Plewnia ( Focus), Roth paints a critical picture of Putin and Medvedev with regard to freedom of the press and influencing the election. He delivers clever analyzes of politics and history and gripping reports on the everyday life of the population, which he ends with a humorous description of a day in the life of the average Russian.

Wilhelm Johann Siemers emphasizes in his specialist review in the portal for political science that Thomas Roth puts the most important political upheavals in Russian politics into context. According to Roth, the face of the world power Russia has changed: "Russia is an authoritarian state internally, but with modern methods and a democratic facade. In terms of foreign policy, the Russian government does not shy away from war either." Without condemning Russian politics across the board, he tries to show the interests of the individual power groups, with the power elite controlling political life down to the smallest detail.

In the gas conflict between Russia and Ukraine in 2008, Roth took an unusual position, as he emphasized the mutual dependency of Russia and Western Europe and also viewed the potential for conflict in Ukraine as problematic.
