Waldorf is a census-designated place in Charles County in the US state of Maryland and has a population of 67,752 (2010). The municipal area is 33.1 km 2 .

Geographical location

Waldorf is roughly in the middle of the peninsula formed by the confluence of the Potomac River and the Susquehanna River , around 30 km south of Washington DC

Waldorf is connected to traffic by its location on the road from Washington via Bowling Green to Richmond (Virginia) , which crosses the Potomac near La Plata (20 km south of Waldorf) via a 2 km long bridge (Highway 301). Waldorf is also on the Washington / Baltimore- La Plata railway line . To the east of the village is the Cedarville State Forest.

history

Before the arrival of the Europeans, Indians from the Piscataways tribe lived in the area, their culture is now documented in the Maryland Indian Cultural Center in Waldorf. Charles County was founded in 1658 and named after the third Lord Baltimore, Charles Calvert. The area is still characterized by tobacco , wheat , corn and soy cultivation ; the next port at La Plata is called Port Tobacco. Thomas Stone , co-signer of the US Declaration of Independence , also comes from here . During the Civil War , the place, with its location near the border line between the Union and the Confederate, suffered greatly from the events of the war. Dr. Samuel A. Mudd (the doctor who treated the injured leg of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth in 1865 ), today there is a museum that deals with the work of this doctor. In 1872 the place received a railway connection to the network of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. The station ("depot") was named "Bean Station" because the railway line ran through "Beantown". By decision of the General Assembly of Maryland, the place was renamed "Waldorf" in 1880 in honor of William Waldorf Astor (1848-1919), the great-grandson of John Jacob Astor (1763-1848) whose birthplace Walldorf in the Electoral Palatinate was. After Waldorf / MD on July 29, 1908, "Plumb Valley" in Waseca County, Minnesota, was renamed "Waldorf". In the 1950s and 1960s Waldorf experienced a boom as an entertainment center to which many Washington citizens went on excursions; Numerous nightclubs and gambling casinos have settled here , and internationally known singers and dancers have performed here. Today Waldorf is primarily a regionally important marketplace with many retailers. The St. Charles Towne Center is particularly important.

There are also two public high schools (approx. 1500 students each) and a private high school. The nearest full university is in La Plata ( College of Southern Maryland ). In Waldorf there is also the Aarons Academy of Beauty.

There are several motels and hotels in Waldorf. The Potomac Ridge Golf Course and Robin Dale Golf Club are on the northern outskirts.
