Otep (also: OTEP or OT3P ) is an American nu-metal - / alternative metal - band , 2000 in Los Angeles , California was founded. The band currently consists of singer / lyricist Otep Shamaya, bassist "Evil" J. McGuire, guitarist Rob Patterson and drummer Mark Bistany.

history

Shortly after Otep Shamaya and "Evil" J. McGuire formed the band in 2000, they caught the attention of music manager Sharon Osbourne during one of their first live performances . Although the band didn't even have a demo recording at the time , Osbourne made it possible for them to perform at Ozzfest 2001, a music festival jointly organized by her and her husband Ozzy Osbourne .

Due to the convincing performances, the label Capitol Records finally signed the band and in 2002 released the first album Sevas Tra (an ananym for “Art Saves”) and in 2004 the second album House of Secrets . On this are Greg Wells and Joey Jordison ( Slipknot ) to hear as a guest musician.

After several line-up changes and a move to the Koch Records label , the third album The Ascension was released there in 2007 , which was produced by Dave Fortman and includes guest appearances by Holly Knight and Greg Tribbett ( Mudvayne ). Both this album and the previous House of Secrets are characterized by aggressive metal music and the alternately whispering and screaming voice of Shamaya, which in its emotionally charged lyrics speaks strongly against the politics of the Bush administration , in particular against the restriction of civil liberties .

In August 2009, the fourth album Smash the Control Machine was released on the Victory Records label. Since then, the band has returned to their 2003 line-up, with Rob Patterson on guitar and Mark Bistany on drums after they left the band. The Japanese / American musician Koichi Fukuda ( Static-X ) and the American musician Emilie Autumn have a joint guest appearance on one of the tracks on the new album .
