Mudvayne was an American band from Peoria ( Illinois ), which is often attributed to Nu Metal . The group classifies itself as modern, technical metal , although these categories do not accurately describe the style. Typical for Mudvayne are heavy breaks and strong rhythm changes, funky borrowings, varied song structures and a constant fluctuation between screaming attacks and melodic parts with clear, soft vocal lines.

After the band had been inactive for various reasons since 2010, singer Chad Gray finally declared the end of Mudvayne in 2016.

history

In 1996, Chad Gray (vocals), Matthew McDonough (drums), Greg Tribbett (guitar) and Shawn Barclay (bass) formed a band called "Mudvayne" (often written "MuDvAyNe.") In a basement in Peoria, Illinois' oldest city "). They did not want to be pigeonholed into certain musical categories, but instead wanted to implement their own ideas of "Nu Metal" against the expectations of the listeners. Since all band members are into trashy B-movies and science fiction strips, they used live performances right from the start to playfully live out their preferences: They appear with make-up and in eye-catching outfits, which quickly attracts attention, but also from critics as unnecessary and understood as a distraction from the actual music.

Mudvayne himself recorded his first EP in 1997, entitled Kill, I Oughtta , which could only be purchased at the band's concerts and in local record stores. After the demo sold very well and the frequent concerts were very popular, various record companies soon became aware of the band. Shawn Barclay left the quartet in 1998 and Ryan Martinie has taken over the bass role since then , whose distinctive, jazz- influenced bass style has shaped the band's sound to a large extent. The band played a lot with its own image at that time, appearing in comic-like outfits were part of it. Chad Gray suddenly called himself Kud , Greg Tribbett was Gurrg , Ryan Martinie became Ryknow and Matthew McDonough posed as sPaG .

The musical change in the band was also recognized by the music industry and in 1999 Mudvayne signed her first contract with Epic Records ( Sony ). The following year, the official debut LD 50, produced by GGGarth and Andy Wallace , was released and became an unexpectedly great success. The album went gold for 500,000 units sold, while the single Dig received an MTV Video Music Award for best rock / metal video and won the very first MTV2 award .

As a result, the record label decided at short notice to release a DVD single for Dig . Both in the USA and in Europe, Mudvayne achieved a relatively high level of popularity in the harder rock sector within a very short time, critics attested the band a refreshing wealth of ideas and great musical potential. The “next big thing” could be read several times, while the debut album, which has a running time of almost 70 minutes, is sometimes seen as overloaded. The record company did its best to attribute the band to the unloved Nu Metal by marketing Mudvayne as " Korn meets Slipknot ".

After the quick success, Mudvayne went on tour for a long time. First they were touring the USA, playing at the Tattoo the Earth Festival and the Ozzfest , before they came to Europe in 2001 as the opening act for Slipknot . After the demand was high there too, the band decided to stay on their own as headliners on the continent for the time being. The following club tour was almost always sold out, especially in England the media and fans rushed to get it.

In the wake of the band's growing success, Epic Records initiated a reissue of the demo Kill, I Oughtta, which is now on Ebay and other platforms at collector's prices . This was finally released in 2002 under the title The Beginning of All Things to End and brought along several remixes in addition to the newly mastered old pieces . Egged on by critics who dubbed the band because of their eye-catching panels and pseudonyms as cliché made Mudvayne the confusion even greater: Kud was now Chüd , Gurrg now leave them Güüg , Ryknow became R-FOD and SPAG wanted now Spüg be mentioned.

Furthermore, a DVD was released with [L] ive D [osage] 50: Live In Peoria , on which a full concert in her hometown Peoria is recorded. After almost 18 months on tour, the band returned home and took a short break to process what had happened.

The recovery phase lasted only a short time because the band was already working on the release of their second full album, which was released in November 2002. With The End of All Things to Come , the band turned away from their previous comic monster image and was now more futuristic in performances and music videos.

Musically, Mudvayne went a little more orderly and impetuous paths, on the one hand they became more personal than before on the one hand, and on the other hand there was now even more social criticism to be heard. The album received consistently good to very good ratings from music critics and the fans were also enthusiastic. The single Not Falling received worldwide attention for the first time and was also used in some films, for example in Ghost Ship as the title and closing song.

On the following tour, Mudvayne toured a large number of countries as headliners, they also appeared at well-known open-air festivals such as Rock am Ring and gave concerts with bands such as Linkin Park and Metallica .

In the meantime, the band was no longer satisfied with the video for their last single Not Falling and asked Epic Records for a new visual implementation according to the wishes of the band. The record company agreed to the great success of the band and a second version of the video for Not Falling was released shortly before the next planned single World So Cold , which the band took as an opportunity to create another DVD single.

After a long break, the pre-single Happy? her third studio album Lost and Found . A first mini tour across the United States and Europe earlier this year, during which several new songs were introduced, left enthusiastic fans and critics. Mudvayne now appeared in public without any special visual gimmicks, but in interviews they made it clear that this should not be overrated and that they keep all options open in this regard. The track Forget to Remember was played in the credits of Saw II .

While on the previous albums esoteric thoughts were thematized, among other things , on Lost and Found there is a more direct view of life and the world. The title of the record should refer to the "process of self-discovery and rediscovery of a personal level" (Matthew McDonough). In 2006 the band was nominated for a Grammy for their song Determined in the category "Best Metal Performance" .

Since 2007 Chad Gray and Greg Tribbett have been running a southern rock / metal project called Hellyeah with ex-members from Danzig and Pantera . In May of this year they released their debut album of the same name.

On November 27, 2007, the album By the People, For the People was released , which contains various demos, live recordings and acoustic versions of tracks that fans of the band could select beforehand by voting on the Internet. In addition, there are two tracks that have not yet been published on the band's official albums and two newly recorded songs, including King of Pain, a cover of a The Police track. Before each piece, singer Chad Gray can be heard, who briefly comments on the following piece.

At the beginning of 2008, the next studio album entitled The New Game was announced and it was released on November 14, 2008. During the recording of The New Game , material was created for another self-produced album. It was published in Germany on December 18, 2009 under the name Mudvayne .
