The Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch is a dance ensemble that was founded in 1973 by the choreographer Pina Bausch .

history

When the Wuppertaler Bühnen merged in 1996 with the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen to form the Schillertheater NRW , Pina Bausch's company left the association with the Wuppertaler Bühnen and in 1999 became independent as Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch GmbH . A comprehensive supply contract with the Wuppertal theaters, which have been independent since 2001, regulates the personnel and material support of the dance theater by the theaters. She was supported by an advisory board ; Andreas Bergmann was the chairman of the Advisory Board of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch GmbH . The city of Wuppertal holds 95% of the GmbH and 5% belongs to Salomon Bausch, the son of the late artist.

In 2003 , the opera house in Barmen was withdrawn from its operating license due to persistent major safety deficiencies . This forced the local politicians to decide on the redevelopment. That is why the Pina Bausch dance theater and the Wuppertaler Bühnen shared the Elberfelder Schauspielhaus until it reopened . The dance theater played (in contrast to the Wuppertal theaters) to the same extent as before in two theaters. Many of Pina Bausch's works, which were premiered in the opera house , were transferred to the theater, which was mastered thanks to extensive tour experience. In 2009 the opera house was reopened after the renovation. Because of the “dramatic budget situation”, the possibility of operating two theaters of roughly the same size (750 and 820 seats respectively) since 2010 in Wuppertal has been questionable. The dance theater Pina Bausch was one of the main arguments in public for the preservation of both stages. Due to the poor budget situation in the city of Wuppertal, the theater was closed at the end of the 2012/2013 season on June 30, 2013, so that this venue is no longer available. In October 2013, the Schauspielhaus Wuppertal Initiative Wuppertal called for a round table on the future of the Schauspielhaus and the implementation of a council resolution from 2006 on the renovation of the building.

After the death of Pina Bausch

After the death of Pina Bausch in 2009, the dance ensemble agreed to continue to perform their guest performances. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Wuppertal continued to support the company. Until 2013, the artistic direction of the dance theater was shared by Dominique Mercy , an ensemble member since 1973, and Robert Sturm , a longstanding artistic assistant to Bausch. In 2008, Cornelia Albrecht took over the commercial management, followed by Dirk Hesse in 2011. In April 2013 Lutz Förster took over the artistic direction. He is a former member of the ensemble in Pina Bausch's company and has been a dance professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts for many years . In the 2015/16 season he had three new productions practiced and performed for the ensemble with guest choreographers for the first time.

From the 2013/2014 season onwards, the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch celebrated the anniversary season Pina40 - 40 years of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch under the direction of Ulli Stepan and Robert Sturm. The starting point was the pieces by Pina Bausch: extraordinary stage sets and costumes, unusual music research and collages, around 130 dancers from more than 20 countries, films with, about and by Pina Bausch, international research trips and co-productions, friendships with artists, filmmakers, photographers, Writers, guest performance partners and companions all over the world, special festivals and idiosyncratic formats. The work of the Pina Bausch Foundation also opened up opportunities for documentation, reflection and reconstruction. In addition to the performances of Bausch's pieces, there was a supporting program in all three cities. The main partner in Düsseldorf was tanzhaus nrw , in Essen the Folkwang University of the Arts and PACT Zollverein .

From May 2017 to July 2018 Adolphe Binder was artistic director and artistic director. On July 13, 2018, it was announced that the Advisory Board of the Tanztheater Wuppertal is terminating its cooperation with Binder with immediate effect. One of the points of conflict was that in mid-July there was still no accepted game plan for the next season. At the same time, the long-time dance theater manager Dirk Hesse declared that he would not renew his contract. The advisory board relied on a “process of critical reflection and further development of dance theater”.

Bettina Wagner-Bergelt took over the artistic direction of the dance theater for two years from January 2019.
