Adolphe Binder (* 1969 in Brașov , Romania ) is a German artistic director, dramaturge and curator .

Life

Adolphe Binder grew up in Transylvania in Romania. In 1978 her family emigrated to Germany . After graduating from high school, she studied German literature , politics and history at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hanover . From 1997 Binder worked as a dramaturge at the Deutsche Oper Berlin .

In 2002 she took over the artistic direction of the dance theater of the Komische Oper Berlin , experienced very successful years with good visitor ratings and fought for Berlin to develop a contemporary and innovative state ballet in addition to the founding (2004) of the then purely classical-traditional-romantic state ballet Opera house dance company preserved. Unfortunately, two opera house ballet companies were terminated due to austerity, many ballet dancers lost their jobs and those interested in dancing lost the variety of dance offers. She was the artistic director of Danskompani Göteborg and thus co-director of the Gothenburg Opera in Sweden from 2011 to 2016. Binder managed to turn this local quality ballet company into an even more contemporary and internationally well-known, successful dance company. Many of their dance productions toured across Europe. Choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Constanza Macras, Sasha Waltz and many more. brought good Europe to Gothenburg. The dance critic of the WELT judged: "Adolphe Binder has done a good job as a manager and source of ideas in Berlin, Sweden and elsewhere, most recently the Göteborg dance company brought her to the global guest floor with spectacular premieres by popular choreographers such as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui or Saburo Thesigawara."

In May 2017 she took up the post of artistic director and artistic director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal founded by Pina Bausch . It was even contractually agreed to supplement the pure museum company with the very valuable, good, old works of Bausch with contemporary dance productions by still living choreographers. With the first two new productions (Oyen and Papaioannou), the dance theater toured the world very successfully in 2018. On July 13, 2018, the advisory board of the Tanztheater Wuppertal decided to separate from Binder immediately. One of the alleged points of conflict was that in mid-July there was still no valid game plan for the next season. Three labor courts (Wuppertal Dec. 2018, Landesarbeitsgericht Düsseldorf Aug. 2019, Federal Labor Court Erfurt Dec. 2019) decided that this claim was false and that the other reasons for termination were also unjust and invalid. The majority of the dance theater dancers stood behind Binder for a long time, the Süddeutsche Ztg. Reported fairly and correctly: "Nazareth Panadero, one of the longest-serving actors in dance theater, says on the phone:" The work is going great, the audience is flowing, we have two completely new pieces developed - all of this is thanks to Adolphe Binder. "For Panadero it is clear:" I want to continue working with her, and I have the feeling that the company wants that too. It opened a way for us to move forward. "The dancer Julie Shanahan is equally stunned:" The way you deal with Adolphe Binder is incredible. I cannot understand what is being criticized about your leadership culture. "Douglas Letheren, who has been involved in dance theater for two years, explains:" Binder is the right woman in the right place. The majority of the dancers are definitely behind her. "

An amicable termination of the contract was not accepted by the previous director, so that according to the Wuppertal culture department head Nocke "pulling the rip cord" was necessary. The actual conflict that led to Binder's extremely incorrect reputation damage is still not transparent today. It is no coincidence that the head of the Bausch Foundation never commented on this process and that the successor director only spoke of maintaining the Bausch heritage and only wanted to show innovative new productions in Wuppertal. In an open letter dated July 14, 2018, Adolphe Binder rejected all criticism of her work. A program draft drawn up by her together with a dance theater team had been available for months, but was not accepted. The incumbent managing director Dirk Hesse, who was her direct supervisor, did not want to accept her work and did not include her in decision-making processes. On December 14th of that year the dismissal was declared invalid by the labor court in Wuppertal . The management of the dance theater appealed against this judgment, but the regional labor court in Düsseldorf rejected the appeal on August 20, 2019. After another attempt to appeal to the Federal Labor Court and its immediate decision Pro-Binder, the State Labor Court, in good consultation with Adolphe Binder and her agreement in January 2020 with the city of Wuppertal Binder, settled long outstanding financial claims, shortly before another public court hearing at the State Labor Court.

Adolphe Binder also worked for Theaterverlag (formerly Friedrich Berlin Verlagsgesellschaft ), for Expo 2000 and the Hanover Theater , worked for festivals , cultural magazines and an underground club. Until 2011 she also managed the agency she founded Binder + Partner in Berlin and is a member of various committees and juries of the international dance scene.
