As a stage for contemporary art, PACT Zollverein produces and co-produces new dance and performance pieces, regularly shows guest performances, has an international residency program for artists and also offers an exchange platform for artists from the region and from all over the world. In 2015 the ministries for science, economy and urban development recognized PACT as a ›place of progress‹ for its interdisciplinary work. Stefan Hilterhaus has been the artistic director of PACT Zollverein since 2002.

history

After the 2001 World Heritage of UNESCO appointed Zeche Zollverein had been taken in 1847 as a coal mine in operation, the wash house in 1907 was completed. Until 1986, the building served mainly as a changing room and shower for around 3,000 miners a day, and at times as a sick bay, wage office and lamp warehouse. After the colliery was closed in 1986, the history of PACT Zollverein began with a squatting of free dancers in the mid-1990s, who played in the former laundromat. In 1999, the house was converted into the Choreographic Center NRW for a year by the architects Christoph Mäckler , Frankfurt am Main. Designated artistic director was Susanne Linke , managing director Gianni Malfer. In 2000, the work in the Choreographic Center NRW began and two years later PACT Zollverein was founded from the institution Choreographic Center NRW and the project Tanzlandschaft Ruhr under the artistic direction of Stefan Hilterhaus and the management of Dirk Hesse. In 2009 Christian Koch took over the management together with Stefan Hilterhaus. The Choreographic Center NRW has been supported by a foundation since 2011. The Choreographic Center NRW Foundation has been the sole shareholder of the Choreographic Center NRW Betriebs GmbH since then. In June 2012 Swantje Stephan took over the management together with Stefan Hilterhaus. Nina Winckler and Stefan Hilterhaus, Artistic Director of PACT, have been managing the company since 2015.

House

The former laundromat has two stages on its 3,000 square meters, which can be used flexibly. There is room for up to 302 visitors on the large stage, and up to 90 visitors can watch the performance on the small stage. Due to the versatility and the wide range of possible uses, other rooms, niches and corridors are also used for performances, exhibitions and installations. In the three furnished studios, on both stages and in the external studio building on the premises, around 30 international groups of artists research, rehearse and produce several weeks a year in the residency program. Alternating training courses for professional dancers are also offered all year round. The house itself still bears the charm of the former laundromat and with its white tiled walls, the numerous soap dishes in which soaps are still filled, or the rows of numbers that can be read on the stage ceiling, reminds of the former use by the miners.

“Where once 3,000 miners showered the coal dust off their bodies every day, PACT Zollverein has emerged, a highly exciting center for contemporary art that cultivates a sense of playfulness. […] With all the review of the present and the orientation towards the future, history is always present. It can be seen on the building itself, on its white tiled walls, on the mirrors and soap dishes, which are reminiscent of the former function of the chew. PACT is such an exciting hybrid between the future and the past, in which the questions of tomorrow are worked on with playful seriousness. ” - Esther Boldt, journalist and theater critic.
