Ferdinand Bruckner
Ferdinand Bruckner (born August 26, 1891 in Sofia , Bulgaria ; † December 5, 1958 in Berlin ; actually Theodor Tagger ) was an Austrian- German writer and theater director.
Life
Theodor Tagger was the son of a Viennese businessman and a French translator. After his parents separated, he spent his youth in Vienna, in a Jesuit boarding school in Graz as well as in Paris and Berlin . Tagger studied philosophy and philology as well as music with Franz Schreker . After graduating, he went to the theater and also emerged as a music critic. However, he was so impressed by the expressionist literary environment in Berlin that he turned away from music in 1916 and devoted himself to poetry . In the following years he published several volumes of poetry, and in 1917 he brought out the magazine Marsyas with texts by authors such as Franz Kafka , Alfred Döblin and Hermann Hesse . In 1922 Tagger founded the Berlin Renaissance Theater , which he handed over to Gustav Hartung in 1927 .
In 1926 and 1930, the plays Illness of Youth and Elisabeth of England appeared under the pseudonym Ferdinand Bruckner . After the success of these works, Tagger revealed the secret of the name, which he himself had kept from his friend Franz Theodor Csokor . He did not change his real name until 1946.
In 1933 he had to emigrate to Paris and wrote Die Rassen , a play in which he wanted to show the world the real extent of Hitler's persecution against European Jews, which culminated in the Holocaust . In 1936 Bruckner emigrated to the USA , in 1951 he settled in Paris. Twenty years after his escape from Germany, Bruckner returned to Berlin in 1953, where he worked as a dramaturgical advisor at the Schillertheater .
Ferdinand Bruckner died in December 1958 at the age of 67 in Berlin. His grave is in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend . By resolution of the Berlin Senate , the last resting place of Ferdinand Bruckner (grave location: 20-Wald-1f) has been dedicated as an honorary grave of the State of Berlin since 1960 . The dedication was last extended in 2016 by the now usual period of twenty years.
