Heerstrasse cemetery
The state-owned cemetery highway ( Waldfriedhof highway ) is located in the Berlin district of Westend the district Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf . The park and forest cemetery is 149,650 square meters and is considered a celebrity cemetery.
Geographical location
It is not, as the name might suggest, on Heerstrasse , but on Trakehner Allee, near the Olympic Stadium . The name refers to the villa colony Heerstraße , for whose residents this cemetery was set up in terraces from 1921 to 1924 around the hollow of the Sausuhlensee.
Cemetery complex
Principles
Originally it was intended to be used to bury the deceased residents of the villa colony Heerstraße, which was built in the 1910s. The name of the cemetery, which has been preserved to this day, results from this. With the assumption of planning sovereignty by the Greater Berlin Association in April 1912, planning a communal cemetery became the planning of an interdenominational cemetery for Greater Berlin. The forest area earmarked for cemetery use was therefore increased from 0.6 to 5 hectares. Erwin Barth , the then Charlottenburg garden director, designed the cemetery complex as a mixture of park and forest cemetery, while Erich Blunck designed the buildings.
A large part of the cemetery area drops steeply about 20 meters to the Sausuhlensee. This lake in its present form was only created from two smaller ponds when the cemetery was laid out. In the areas with a steep gradient, Barth adapted the system to the terrain, the paths lead down to the lake shore. In the rather flat western part of the cemetery, Barth created a roundabout , towards which most of the paths lead in a star shape. The existing trees, mainly pines , were included in the design and supplemented with new deciduous trees. The cemetery was opened on October 7, 1924.
expansion
When it opened, the cemetery only extended on the west side of the Sausuhlensee. However, the area east of the lake was already planned as an expansion area. A crematorium was to be built on the eastern hill opposite the mourning hall . It was planned to connect both structures with a pedestrian bridge. In 1935/1936 the expansion plans were dropped. The extension area was included in the green planning of the Reichssportfeld . In addition, the interdenominational cemetery, which also housed numerous Jewish graves, was a "thorn in the side" for the National Socialists .
Immediately after the Second World War , on May 13, 1945, the cemetery was expanded on the eastern side of the lake. The area was urgently needed at that time to be able to bury the war dead. There are two war cemetery here with 1,342 war victims.
Todays use
The Heerstraße cemetery is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Berlin. With 51 honorary graves in the State of Berlin, it has more honor graves than the prominent cemeteries Waldfriedhof Dahlem or Waldfriedhof Zehlendorf . Since May 21, 2010 (official opening) there has been a "community grave site " of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V. The grave field is in the area east of the lake. Urn burials and burials can be carried out.
In addition, there are resting communities for "community burials" by non-members of the Volksbund.
Mourning hall
The mourning hall was built from 1921 to 1923 based on designs by Erich Blunck . Blunck designed a castle-like brick building. The two-story hall rises on a limestone plinth to level the sloping terrain. A two-wing flight of stairs leads to the entrance. On three sides of the hall, it is surrounded by a walkway at the level of the entrance. Above it, the almost unadorned ten-meter-high outer walls rise on the almost square floor plan, each pierced by three narrow windows. The building was crowned by a 15 meter high, steep, convex curved roof pyramid covered with beaver tails .
In 1935, the area around the cemetery was redesigned for the Olympic Games that took place in Berlin in 1936. The roof of the mourning hall, which could be seen from the main access road to the Reichssportfeld, bothered the National Socialist rulers. They had the mourning hall redesigned by the architect Karl Schellenberg , who in turn consulted the original architect Blunck for this work. The high roof was replaced by a flat tent roof, the round arches in the walkway were replaced by pointed arches, walls and windows were kept simpler. Relief heads by the sculptor Paul Wynand were placed between the arches of the gallery as decorative elements . They represent the different ages and heroes of salvation history.
The mourning hall was badly damaged in World War II and rebuilt in 1948 as it was in 1936.
Administration building, flower hall and portal
As access, Erich Blunk created an ensemble of administration building, flower hall and portal as brick buildings. The portal and the flower hall faced each other and had the same outlines. The portal is no longer there, the flower hall only in a very different form. The country-style administration building with a high pitched roof is still largely in its original state.
