Klare Bloch , b. Klara Begall (born February 13, 1908 in Schmargendorf ; † November 4, 1988 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) was one of the first taxi drivers in Berlin. She resisted National Socialism by hiding numerous Jews in her apartment in Berlin.

Life

Klare Bloch grew up as Klara Begall in the Berlin suburbs of Schmargendorf and Halensee . Her father ran a small business as a power carriage driver . After graduating from business school , she trained as a clerk and worked in various commercial companies. In 1930 she got a license to drive a motor vehicle and drove her father's truck. This made her one of the first taxi drivers in Berlin.

In 1938 she divorced and moved into an apartment in Charlottenburg's Klausenerplatz -iez. From 1943 she hid the communist Erich Bloch and others in her apartment at Horstweg 28 , who, like Bloch , were persecuted by the Nazis as Jews and resistanceists . They later married and Klara Begall took the name Bloch .

Klare Bloch died in early November 1988 at the age of 80. Her grave is in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend . She rests there by the side of her husband Erich Bloch, who died in 1965.

The final resting place of Kläre Bloch (grave location: I-Erb.-Mauer) has been dedicated to the State of Berlin as an honorary grave since 2020 . The dedication is initially valid for the usual period of twenty years, but can then be extended.
