Volkmar Haase (born December 27, 1930 in Berlin ; † August 14, 2012 in Brüssow ) was a German sculptor .

Life

From 1951, Haase studied painting at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin , most recently as a master student of Max Kaus . He opened up sculpture autodidactically. Haase has worked as a freelance sculptor since 1958, with his own studio in Berlin-Kladow from 1965 to 2012 .

In 1964 he worked in the USA and in 1968 in Brissago in Ticino. Since 2003 he lived and worked on the estate in Brüssow in the Uckermark , an old manor that was built by Barthold Friedrich von Ramin at the beginning of the 17th century, belonged to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I from 1725 and was part of the Nazi era in the possession of the former Prussian equestrian general August von Mackensen .

Volkmar Haase died in Brüssow in mid-August 2012 at the age of 81. The burial took place in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend (grave location: 8-B-123/125).

His sculptural work is devoted exclusively to abstract sculpture. In his work, Haase dealt with the fundamental themes of abstract art, in particular with themes from Greek mythology such as B. Laocoon, Icarus or Scylla and Charybdis. Painting and drawings complement the pictorial work. Hella Kaiser writes on the wave issue that occupied Haase in the 1990s:

“It began in 1989 with Aurora, the wave-shaped sculpture that the sea seems to have given birth. (...) The following works became more and more lively, the waves break, strive apart, here and there the artist has put a ball in it. Maybe the world as a plaything of time? When looking at such a sculpture, the past and the future seem to merge, transience becomes tangible. Melancholy may occasionally set in, but never really deep sadness. The senses are touched in a wonderful way, the mind is no longer valid. (...) As if your own feelings, hopes or fears are not perpetuated there - in steel and iron. (...) through his sculptures he gives us what has become so rare: dreams and fantasies. "

- Hella Kaiser, 1996

His sculptures - mostly made of stainless steel  - are mostly designed for public spaces. You can meet his sculptures in Göttingen , Witten , Nürtingen , Bremerhaven , Hanover , Wolfsburg , Duisburg and elsewhere. Over 40 sculptures, some of them monumental, can be found on Berlin streets and in Berlin parks.

“There is an expansive spatialization in all of Volkmar Haase's works. His sculptures standing in front of buildings are the dialectical counterpoint to the stationary building mass, a dynamic accent. The elegance of the shape and the surface charms of the material, which always remains primary, without attempting to cover up its origin through artificial processing, contribute significantly to this. "

- Curt Grützmacher, 1987

Museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City or the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg have works by Haase in their collections. The exhibition rooms in the Brüssow manor house and the adjacent garden show a cross-section of Volkmar Haase's sculptures from 1958 to 2012, supplemented by hand drawings, paintings and graphics / etchings.
