history

1873 to 1963

The house with its neo-baroque facade was built in 1873 as a residential building according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Neumann (1826–1907). In 1904, after further renovations and extensions by the architects Heino Schmieden and Rudolph Speer (1849–1893), it was acquired by the banker Egon Sally Fürstenberg . Because of his Jewish origins, Fürstenberg had to sell the house to the Berlin Artists' Association in 1938 , before he emigrated to the USA, and they set up their graphic cabinet, library and archive here. In 1943 the building was badly damaged by bombing and the club library was destroyed. The house was rebuilt in the late 1940s and the first exhibition opened in 1950. The building has been called "Haus am Lützowplatz" since 1955, and until 1963 it served as the headquarters of the Berlin Artists' Association.

1963 to 1991

In 1961 the association Förderkreis Kulturzentrum Berlin e. V. , a founding of leading social democrats and metalworkers from West Berlin , to give the city's cultural life new impulses. The association, which today has 70 members, bought the building and has been running an exhibition institute for contemporary art since 1963. Konrad Jule Hammer ran the house until his death in 1991 . Initially, the cabaret artist Wolfgang Neuss had his domicile in the basement , a venue known far beyond Berlin. Today the building complex also houses the administration of the Berlin-Hanover Cooperative Association, as well as the Federal Cultural Foundation and the State Cultural Foundation .

1992 until today

After the renovation in 1992, 240 m² are available for exhibitions in the front building and 70 m² in the side wing connected by the garden for cabinet exhibitions. The garden itself is also the site of various cultural events in summer. Five to six exhibitions take place every year. Accompanying catalogs provide more detailed information about individual artists or thematic contexts. The focus of the exhibition is painting , but new art forms such as conceptual and object art are increasingly being included. In a series of “... and students” , well-known professors from German art academies introduced themselves together with their students. From 1992 to March 2013 the artist Karin Pott was managing director and artistic director. Marc Wellmann has been the artistic director of the house on Lützowplatz since April 2013 .
