Marc Wellmann

Marc Wellmann (* 1968 ) is a German art historian and curator .

Life

Wellmann studied art history and American studies at the Free University of Berlin . His master's thesis, submitted to Werner Busch and Eberhard König in 1996 , dealt with the Hamburg painter Balthasar Denner . In 2004 he did his doctorate with Robert Kudielka at the Berlin University of the Arts on the discovery of blurring in optics and painting. On the relationship between art and science between the 15th and 19th centuries . From 1996 to 2015 Wellmann was responsible for the exhibitions of the Bernhard Heiliger Foundation and research on Bernhard Heiliger's catalog raisonné . During this time, together with Lothar Romain, he conceived the artist's first posthumous overview exhibition in the National Museum in Stettin (1998), the exhibition tour of Heiliger's portrait heads (2000–2001) and the large-scale retrospective Bernhard Heiliger 1915–1995: Cosmos of a Sculptor in Martin -Gropius-Bau (2005-2006). After a phase as a freelance curator, in which he presented the group exhibition The Power of Things - Sculpture Today! realized in the Georg-Kolbe-Museum and was from 2008 to 2012 exhibition director of the Georg-Kolbe-Museum and was responsible there a. a. the exhibitions "Romantic Machines. Kinetic Art of the Present" (2009); Anton Henning . Oasis (2009); 1910 FIGURE 2010 (2010); Thorsten Brinkmann. Studiomove (2010); William Wauer and Berlin Cubism (2011); ABSTRACT //// SCULPTURE (2011); Fabiàn Marcaccio (2011). He had lectureships at the Free University and the UdK Berlin. He is the author of publications mainly on contemporary and post-war art.

Wellmann has been Artistic Director at Haus am Lützowplatz , Berlin's oldest art association, since April 2013 .
