Cultural Foundation of the Länder
The Kulturstiftung der Länder (KSL) is a foundation whose task is to preserve and promote German culture . This makes it one of the most important sponsors of cultural policy in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Its original purpose was the so-called purchasing community of the countries, which should support museums in the acquisition of works of art. To this end, the foundation provides funds from which works in the fields of painting , sculpture , photography , applied arts , music and literature can be acquired if an individual museum does not have the financial means.
Another field of activity is provenance research . Since 2008, the foundation has sponsored the office for provenance research / research at the Institute for Museum Research of the National Museums in Berlin . It also provides funding for exhibitions, documentaries and foundations. It is a cooperation partner of the German Theater Prize Der Faust and organizes the awarding of artist grants for the Villa Massimo in Rome . The foundation publishes the Arsprototo magazine.
The foundation took place on December 2nd, 1987 and on April 1st, 1988 the foundation started its work in West Berlin . Berlin is still the seat of the foundation today. The sponsors are the federal states , which are also represented on the Board of Trustees . The foundation's funds come from contributions from the federal states totaling 10 million euros per year (as of 2013). In addition, the foundation works with other public and private institutions and individuals who contribute to the acquisitions. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation , the Hermann Reemtsma Foundation and the Rudolf-August Oetker-Foundation provide significant sums of money . In the 25 years between the founding of the foundation and the end of 2013, six hundred million euros have been raised.
In 2006 the plan to merge the foundation with the Federal Cultural Foundation , whose activity profile is very similar, failed . In the spring of 2011, the Junge Freundeskreis was founded with the aim of “motivating young people to get involved in the German cultural landscape and for the preservation of their cultural assets and to promote them in the long term”. From 2004 to June 29, 2017, the general secretary was Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen , the former Aachen head of culture, and since June 30, 2017, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Laschet cabinet. Her successor was the ancient orientalist Markus Hilgert on December 7, 2017 .
Chairman of the Board of Trustees is the former CEO of Deutsche Bank Rolf-E. Breuer (as of 2018).
