Markus Hilgert

Markus Hilgert (born August 11, 1969 in Koblenz ) is a German ancient orientalist , cultural manager and general secretary of the Kulturstiftung der Länder .

Education and professional career

Hilgert graduated from the Fürst-Johann-Ludwig-Schule in Hadamar in 1989 and was an active member of the Limburger Domsingknaben from 1976 to 1990 . After completing his military service, Hilgert studied Ancient Near Eastern Studies , Semitic Studies , Comparative Religious Studies and Near Eastern Archeology at the Universities of Marburg , Munich and Chicago from 1990 to 1996 . In 1999 he received his doctorate in ancient oriental studies at the University of Marburg.

From 1998 to 2001 Hilgert was a research assistant, then until 2004 research assistant ( C1 ) and from 2004 to 2007 senior assistant (C2) at the Chair for Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Jena , where he completed his habilitation in 2004 and received a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation from 2006 was. From April 2007 to February 2014 Hilgert was Professor ( W 3 ) for Assyriology with a focus on Sumerology at the University of Heidelberg . From March 1, 2014 to May 31, 2018, Hilgert was director of the Vorderasiatisches Museum in the Pergamon Museum of the State Museums in Berlin - Prussian Cultural Heritage and coordinated the national joint project “museum4punkt0 - Digital strategies for the museum of the future” from 2017 on behalf of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation until 2018. On December 7, 2017, Hilgert was elected Secretary General by the Board of Trustees of the Kulturstiftung der Länder, succeeding Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen , and took up his post on June 1, 2018. Barbara Helwing became her successor as director of the Vorderasiatisches Museum .

Awards

From 1990 to 1999 Hilgert was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation for basic and doctoral grants . From 1990 to 1995 he was also a fellow of the Dey Foundation of the Diocese of Limburg . In 2005 he was awarded a Heisenberg grant by the German Research Foundation.

In 1988 Hilgert was awarded the special prize of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for overall victory in the state competition for ancient languages ​​of the Hessian Classical Philological Association. His scientific qualification work was honored with the dissertation award of the University of Marburg (2001) and the habilitation award of the University of Jena (2006). In 2011 Hilgert received the annual award from Heidelberg University.

Hilgert is honorary professor at the University of Heidelberg (since 2014), at the University of Marburg (since 2015) and at the Free University of Berlin (since 2017).
