Barbara Helwing is a German archaeologist from the Middle East .

Professional background

Barbara Helwing studied Prehistory and Early History , Near Eastern Archeology and Ethnology at the University of Heidelberg . After teaching and monument office excavations in Rhineland-Palatinate , Baden-Württemberg and Austria as well as excavations and processing campaigns of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Tiryns , she has participated annually since 1987 in excavations of the Heidelberg Institute in Lidar Höyük and Nevalı Çori . In 1991 she completed her studies with a master's thesis on the subject of ceramics from the early Bronze Age burial grounds of Titriş , SE Turkey . In 1996 it was in Heidelberg with a dissertation on The Late Chalcolithic pottery from Hassek Höyük , SO-Turkey doctorate .

During his studies, Helwing worked from 1987 to 1991 at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Heidelberg, and from 1992 to 1995 he was a research assistant for the research project Early Metals in Mesopotamia , which was carried out in cooperation between the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics and the Institute for prehistory and early history at the University of Heidelberg. From 1995 to 2003 Helwing was field director of the excavations in Oylum Höyük with Engin Özgen , and from 2001 to 2004 of the German side of the German-Iranian joint project in Arisman . In 1997 she became a lecturer at Bilkent University in Ankara .

In 2000 she first moved to the DAI as a consultant for Iranian archeology and later became head of the Tehran branch . From 2001 to 2004 she took over the management of the German side of the German-Iranian joint project in Arisman . She then took part in Iranian field research in Tappe Sialk . In 2005 and 2006 she carried out rescue excavations in the Sivand reservoir . 2008 Helwing habilitated at the Department of the cultures of the ancient Near East at the University of Tübingen and taught there ever since as a lecturer . Since 2009 she has been working with the interdisciplinary project Ancient Kura in the Republic of Azerbaijan on Kamiltepe . In 2016 Helwing moved to the University of Sydney to the Edwin Cuthbert Hall Chair in Middle Eastern Archeology . As the successor to Markus Hilgert , Helwing will take over the Vorderasiatisches Museum of the Berlin State Museums, Prussian Cultural Heritage, from spring 2019 .

In 2017 Helwing curated the important exhibition Iran. Early cultures between water and desert in the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn . She is a full member of the DAI.
