Carl Justi
Carl Justi (born August 2, 1832 in Marburg , † December 9, 1912 in Bonn ) was a German philosopher and art historian .
Life
Carl Justi was one of the few art historians who devoted himself to the study and research of Spanish art history in the 19th century . After graduating from high school Philippinum Marburg , he studied theology and philosophy in Berlin. He received his doctorate in philosophy in 1859 with the work The Aesthetic Elements in Platonic Philosophy . He then first taught in Marburg . Justi devoted himself above all to the history of aesthetics since ancient times . In 1866 he was appointed associate professor and in 1869 full professor. In 1871 he was transferred to Kiel for a short time . He had an early interest in modern art history, gave lectures in this subject and in archeology and also traveled to Italy to pursue his studies there. From 1872 to 1901 he was professor of art history in Bonn .
Justi held the art-historical view, which was widespread in the second half of the 19th century, that art history is essentially the history of artists. He is thus in the tradition of the vita literature founded by Giorgio Vasari . His main work is the two-volume treatise on the Spanish painter Diego Velazquez . In addition, he wrote important biographies about Winckelmann , Murillo and Michelangelo , who had an abundance of material and a quality of presentation that had not been common in art history literature to date. He edited letters from the art collector Philipp von Stosch .
Through his younger brother Ferdinand , he was an uncle of the art historian Ludwig Justi .
Honors
In 1902 he was awarded the order Pour le mérite for science and the arts and in 1912 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Bonn .
In honor of Justi, the “Carl Justi Association for the Promotion of Art Studies Cooperation with Spain, Portugal and Ibero America eV” was launched in 1989.
In 1971, Carl-Justi-Strasse in Bonn was named after him.
