Reinhold Lepsius
Ludwig Richard Reinhold Lepsius (born June 14, 1857 in Berlin ; † March 14, 1922 there ) was a portrait painter of the Berlin Secession who was well-known before the First World War ; he is considered a representative of German Impressionism .
Life
Reinhold Lepsius was the son of the Egyptologist Karl Richard Lepsius , who was a professor at Berlin University and director of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin , which he founded.
Many of his works must be considered lost due to the Second World War . His portraits of the archaeologist Ernst Curtius and the philosopher Wilhelm Dilthey are still known . Lepsius was one of the first to paint openly from photographs . His acquaintance and admiration for the poet Stefan George , who held readings in the salon of the artist couple Lepsius, is more vividly remembered today than his pictures.
From 1892 Lepsius was married to the painter Sabine Lepsius , née Graef (1864–1942). The couple had four children: Monica (* 1893), Stefan, Sabine (* 1899), Sibylle (* 1902). Her son Stefan Lepsius (1897–1917), named after Stefan George, died in the First World War .
Reinhold Lepsius was a member of the German Association of Artists .
