Arnold Berliner

Arnold Berliner (born December 26, 1862 on Gut Mittelneuland near Neisse , † March 22, 1942 in Berlin ) was a German physicist .

Life

Arnold Berliner studied physics at the University of Breslau . In 1886 he received his doctorate with the thesis on Molecularrefraction of organic liquids .

He was employed by AEG and then became editor of the journal Die Naturwissenschaften , which gave him a prominent position in physics in Germany. He was also the editor of the Physical Dictionary (1924, 2nd edition 1932) together with Karl Scheel . Berliner was culturally and artistically interested in many different ways and was close friends with Gustav Mahler, among others

Because of his Jewish descent, Berliner was forced by the publishing house in 1935 to give up editing the natural sciences . He did not succeed in emigrating . He was deported in March 1942, at the age of 79, by suicide . He was buried in the Heerstraße cemetery in today's Berlin-Westend district . His sister Fanny Berliner (1861–1931) rests at his side.

By resolution of the Berlin Senate , the last resting place of Arnold Berliner in the Heerstraße cemetery (grave location: 18-F-12) has been dedicated as an honorary grave of the State of Berlin since 1980 . The dedication was extended in 2001 by the usual period of twenty years.
