Live and act

Carl Husemann comes from a long-established Lower Saxon farming family. Since 1921 he studied agriculture , first at the Technical University of Munich , then at the University of Halle (Saale) , where he in 1925 with a dissertation on the East Frisian bog colony Marcardsmoor Dr. rer. nat was awarded a doctorate. He then headed an agricultural experimental ring in Schleswig-Holstein for four years . From 1929 to 1949 he was head of the agricultural department of the state moor research station in Bremen . Here he mainly dealt with the amelioration, fertilization and use of bog, heather and marsh soils. In 1950 he took over the management of the newly founded Lower Saxony March Experimental Station and Grassland School in Infeld / Oldenburg .

In 1953 Husemann accepted a call as a full professor to the chair for cultural engineering and grassland management at the Technical University of Berlin . As director of the institute of the same name he worked here until his retirement in 1966. In Berlin, he mainly dealt with questions of the soil water balance, with melioration measures, the utilization of agricultural wastewater and the assessment of grassland locations, but also with the utilization of his research results for the cultural-technical practice.

Husemann published numerous articles in the "Zeitschrift für Kulturtechnik und Flurbereinigung", which he founded in 1960. As co-editor and lead editor , he has shaped the profile of this specialist journal and set new standards for the further development of cultural technology into an interdisciplinary science by including publications from technical, biological and economic disciplines. In 1963 the German Agricultural Society awarded him the Silver Max Eyth Memorial Medal for his services to agriculture .

Carl Husemann died in Berlin in October 1987 at the age of 89. His grave is on the state's own cemetery in Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend (grave location: 19-D-17/18).
