Eduard Wandrey (born July 26, 1899 in Berlin-Friedrichshagen , † January 23, 1974 in Berlin ) was a German actor and voice actor .

Life

Wandrey was born in Friedrichshagen on Scharnweberstrasse, the child of civil servant Fritz Wandrey and his wife Helena, who came from a Polish family near Posen and had only attended elementary school for four years . His mother wanted to name him Edward using the Polish spelling, but the officer in charge changed this to the German spelling Eduard on the birth certificate. Wandrey completed his acting training with Ferdinand Gregori in Berlin, where he was engaged as an actor at Berlin theaters and operetta stages from 1919, a. a. at the Volksbühne , Hebbeltheater , Schillertheater , Schlossparktheater .

In 1938 Wandrey made his film debut in Am Seidenen Faden . This was followed by appearances in larger productions such as alongside Emil Jannings in Wolfgang Liebeneiner's Bismarck biography, in the post-war drama Our Daily Bread or alongside Horst Buchholz in Die Halbstarken , where Wandrey himself mainly played smaller parts and character roles. In addition, he found an active field of activity in television productions such as the crime series Der Fall Rohrbach or the satire The filled life of Alexander Dubronski .

Eduard Wandrey also worked extensively in dubbing from 1950 and lent his deep and voluminous voice to prominent actors such as Ernest Borgnine ( Sensation on Saturday ), Lee J. Cobb ( Exodus ), Oskar Homolka (among others in War and Peace ), Burl Ives ( Among others in Beyond Eden and his Oscar- winning role in Wide Land ), Edward G. Robinson ( Death of a Citizen ) and Orson Welles ( King Oedipus ). Most of all he dubbed Charles Laughton , whom he voiced in Spartacus and Witness for the Prosecution .

His distinctive voice can also be heard in many Walt Disney cartoons, such as Cinderella (1950) as King and Peter Pan (1953) as Captain Hook. He achieved particular popularity, however, in the German version of the cartoon series Flintstones , for which he acted as the first German spokesman for Fred Feuerstein from 1969 . Even Yogi Bear was first voiced by him.

Wandrey was married twice and had their first wife, who died in 1946, their son Peter, born in 1932, and their daughter, Angelika, born in 1937.

Eduard Wandrey died in Berlin in January 1974 at the age of 74. His grave is in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend (grave location: II-W-12-90 / 91). The actor and director Josef R. Lorandt (1895–1947) rests in the same tomb .
