Otis Harlan (born December 29, 1865 in Zanesville , Ohio , † January 21, 1940 in Martinsville , Indiana ) was an American character actor and comedian.

Life

Otis Harlan first worked as an actor in vaudeville theaters, later he was seen on Broadway . There he appeared in over 15 plays between 1894 and 1915, whereby the slightly corpulent actor was often committed to comical supporting roles. In 1915 he made his way to Hollywood , where he played a supporting role as a newspaper editor during the silent film era, among others in John Ford's western Drei Rauhe Gesellen . Harlan has also appeared in Universal Comedies with Reginald Denny several times . In 1929 he played the role of Captain Andy in the first film version of the musical Show Boat . In the 1930s, Harlan rarely got beyond minor supporting roles, including as Schneider Starveling in Max Reinhardt 's star-studded film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream . For Walt Disney he spoke the dwarf Happy in the original version of the famous cartoon Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs . He also voiced the mole Mr. Mole in Disney's Bambi .

The latter film wasn't released until two years after his death. In total, Harlan starred in over 130 films over the course of his career. He died of a heart attack in 1940 at the age of 74 and was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus . Harlan was married to Nellie Harvey, their daughter Marion Harlan (1904–1971) also worked as a film actress for a few years. Harlan's nephew was the well-known silent film actor Kenneth Harlan .
