Boleslaw Barlog
Boleslaw Barlog (born Boleslaw Stanislaus Barlog ; born March 28, 1906 in Breslau , † March 17, 1999 in Berlin ) was a German director and theater manager .
Life
Barlog's father was a lawyer in Wroclaw. When he came to Berlin with his family, Boleslaw attended secondary school and did an apprenticeship as a bookseller after completing secondary school . In addition to books, his love was the theater.
In the 1920s he became Heinz Hilpert's assistant director at the Volksbühne in Berlin . However, he lost his position in 1933 after the seizure of power by the National Socialists. Barlog was then lifeguard at the Wannsee . As an employee at the Olympic Games in 1936 , he found access to film through the events he staged in today's Waldbühne . In 1937 he began again as an assistant director, this time at UFA under the directors Wolfgang Liebeneiner and Helmut Käutner .
After the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945, from the end of the war in the midst of the rubble of Berlin, he contributed to the reconstruction of the theater landscape, first through performances in old cinemas, then with the reopening of the Schlosspark Theater in Steglitz with "a loan of 40,000 paper marks as initial capital" the Berlin City Council for Education made available to him. Finally, Barlog, who was "tired of the cramped stage conditions in Steglitz, which actually only allowed small pieces," also took over the management of the Schiller Theater . Barlog worked as general director of the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin until 1972 and staged more than 100 plays during this time. With authors like Samuel Beckett and Günter Grass and actors like Tilla Durieux, Hermine Körner, Erich Schellow, Rolf Henniger and Martin Held, this was considered the heyday of West Berlin theater life after 1945. His successor was Hans Lietzau . From 1990 until his death in 1999 Heiko Reissig was Boleslaw Barlog's personal assistant.
From 1939 until his death, Barlog was married to Herta Schuster. He was buried in the Zehlendorf forest cemetery in Berlin-Nikolassee . The grave is one of the honor graves of the State of Berlin .
