Uwe Gronostay

Uwe Gronostay (born October 25, 1939 in Hildesheim , † November 29, 2008 in Berlin ) was a German choir conductor and composer.

Gronostay, who grew up in Braunschweig , became organist at the St. Jakobi Church there at the age of 15 . After studying church music in Bremen , he worked as a cantor , lecturer for organ playing and freelance work for Radio Bremen . In 1972 Uwe Gronostay was appointed director and chief conductor of the Berlin RIAS Chamber Choir . At the same time he directed the Berlin Philharmonic Choir from 1982 to 2002 and, from 1987, the Nederlands Kamerkoor Amsterdam for ten years .

Uwe Gronostay initially worked as a professor of choral conducting in Frankfurt am Main and between 1989 and 2003 at the Berlin University of the Arts .

Uwe Gronostay was the first guest conductor of the Dutch Radio Choir Hilversum . In 1997, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands made him Knight of the Orde van Oranje-Nassau in recognition of his services .

In 1999 Uwe Gronostay received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany from Federal President Johannes Rau .

His compositions include meditations for choir and piano, motets and organ works.

Uwe Gronostay died in Berlin in 2008 at the age of 69. His grave is in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend (grave location: II-W13-104 / 105).
