Wilhelm Heim

Wilhelm Heim (born November 2, 1906 in Berlin-Kreuzberg , † December 15, 1997 in Berlin ) was a German surgeon and medical professional .

After graduating from the Leibniz Gymnasium in Berlin, Wilhelm Heim studied medicine at the universities in Berlin and Innsbruck from 1925 to 1930 . In 1931 he was at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University in Berlin to Dr. med. PhD . Heim joined the NSDAP and the SA in the spring of 1933 , where he rose to SA medical standard leader in 1943.

After his habilitation with the subject of clinical and experimental studies on the problem of blood conservation in 1941, he initially worked as a private lecturer in surgery at the Charité in Berlin, later as a senior physician at the Berlin municipal hospital Am Urban and the Moabit hospital . In 1948 Heim became chief physician of the surgical department of the Rudolf Virchow Hospital and from 1949 until his retirement in 1971 medical director.

The focus of his work and research was on transfusion medicine and thyroid surgery. In 1949 Heim initiated the establishment of the Berlin blood donation service and created the Berlin blood bank , which he headed until 1966. In 1959 Heim became an Apl. Professor at the Free University of Berlin appointed, in 1961 honorary professor for hospital construction at the TU Berlin .

Another focus of work was projects to promote further medical training . Among other things, he re-founded the Kaiserin Friedrich Foundation for medical training in 1972 and was its managing director until 1985.

In addition, he held a leading position in the committees and associations of medical self-administration. a. 1956 appointed President and later Honorary President of the German Society for Blood Transfusion . From 1974 to 1982 Heim was President of the Berlin Medical Association . He was also a board member of the German Medical Association .

Wilhelm Heim died in Berlin in December 1997 at the age of 91. His grave is in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend (grave location: 8-B-3 / 3a).
