Life

Grave of Hans Pels-Leusden in the Heerstrasse cemetery in Berlin-Westend

Pels-Leusden, the child of a family of lawyers, studied with Paul Bindel from 1927 and was trained as a painter by Willy Jaeckel . In the early 1930s he was discovered and promoted by Edwin Redslob and in 1932 he had his first solo exhibition at the renowned Nierendorf Gallery in Berlin. A number of his pictures were confiscated during the Nazi era and destroyed in a hail of bombs in 1941.

In 1950 he took over an antiquarian bookshop in the ruins at Kurfürstendamm 181, which over time turned into an art trade and became a place of pilgrimage for the Berlin art scene. After the premises there became too small and the house was demolished due to the construction of Lietzenburger Straße as a bypass road for Kurfürstendamm, he moved to Kurfürstendamm 59/60 in 1961. He had the villa Grisebach at Fasanenstrasse 25, threatened by decay, reconstructed from private funds and moved into the new gallery space on March 21, 1986 with his business partner Bernd Schultz. In the same year he founded the Villa Grisebach auctions there with the art dealers Bernd Schultz (Berlin), Wilfried Utermann (Dortmund), Raimund Thomas (Munich) and Michael Neumann (Düsseldorf).

From his collected works by Käthe Kollwitz , he founded the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Berlin in the neighboring building, Fasanenstrasse 24, on May 31, 1986 . He served as its director until his death.

Hans Pels-Leusden died in Berlin in April 1993 at the age of 84. His grave is in the state's own cemetery in Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend (grave location: 7-G-20/21).
