The Burgstall Dettelbach refers to a lost hilltop castle at 201  m above sea level. NHN in Dettelbach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen in Bavaria . Today the town's former rent office is located on the site and is used as a residential building.

Geographical location

The successor building to the castle is located on the extreme, northern edge of Dettelbach's old town. It is framed by the streets Kirchplatz in the south, Eichgasse in the west, Burggraben in the north and Faltergasse in the east. The street name Burggraben refers to the original use of the site, on which the town's old tithe courtyard was housed in addition to the rent office . The St. Augustine Church is located directly opposite the remains of the castle at a distance of about 30 meters.

history

The building was first mentioned in the sources in 741. At that time, when the Franks began to settle the area on the Main , it was called the royal court "Tetilabah" and formed a bottleneck for the Franconian advance. The military base meant that more and more residents settled around the fortified manor, so that a village was created in the east of the complex.

As early as the second half of the 8th century, the widely ramified royal estate disintegrated and was distributed to deserving lords of the area, who were supposed to remain loyal to the king. Dettelbach probably came to the Benedictine convent in Kitzingen together with Kitzingen and Iphofen . How the monastery used the former manor is unclear, the castle is no longer mentioned in the following centuries.

It was not until the 12th century that Helmrich von Dettelbach, the first new owner of the fortified complex, appeared in the springs. In the period that followed, the Knights of Dettelbach, who had their headquarters in the former royal estate, continued to expand their influence. From the 13th century onwards, the manor was expanded into a fortified castle. Their exact size and appearance is, however, in the dark.

As early as 1466, however, the castle of the Knights of Dettelbach was described as dilapidated. With the decline of the aristocratic family, their seat fell into disrepair. Later the town's tithe courtyard and the rent office were built here, so that administrative buildings continued to be built on the site of the former castle.
