The castle in Schwarzenau

The New Schwarzenau Castle is a former aristocratic residence in Schwarzenau , a district of Schwarzach am Main. Today a teaching and research institute for animal husbandry is set up here. The facility is located to the east of the St. Laurentius Church . Another aristocratic seat exists in the village, the Old Castle .

history

The history of a castle in the village begins at the end of the 16th century. At that time, Valentin Echter von Mespelbrunn , a prince-bishop bailiff and brother of Bishop Julius Echter, acquired the village from the Münsterschwarzach monastery and began to build a residence for himself and his family here. The previous castle was built in the same place as the current building and was to last until the 18th century.

In the meantime the village had come to the barons of Erthal . The present palace complex was built under these gentlemen in 1721. When the line died out in 1807, the castle came to the Counts of Ingelheim , who made minor renovations to the building. The counts leased the building to various people. In 1933 the castle was sold. Louis von Westheim became the new owner. However, the property remained leased to the Kessler family.

In 1960 the building changed hands again. This time the Bavarian state came into possession of the castle. Thereupon the Bavarian teaching, testing and specialist institute for animal husbandry was set up in the premises. The castle is listed as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .

description

The castle is in close proximity to the parish church of St. Laurentius. It presents itself as a long, two-story building. Originally the roof was as hipped worked, after setting up the Laboratory however taught a simple gable roof one. The roof was provided with many dormer windows, probably to accommodate offices here. There is a low wall with rusticated stone pillars all around the street.

A portal was installed in the center on the south side . It has pillars and a broken gable . It is framed by acanthus work. A coat of arms of the imperial counts of Echter and Ingelheim was attached over the portal. A curved, two-flight staircase leads to the portal.
