St. Laurentius (Schwarzenau)
The St. Laurentius Church in Schwarzenau is the parish church of the Schwarzach district. It stands on Stadtschwarzacher Straße in the middle of the village.
history
In 1135 Schwarzenau became a branch of the Gerlachshausen parish. The place received its own parish in 1609. This was preceded by the acquisition of the village by Valentin Echter von Mespelbrunn , brother of the Würzburg prince-bishop Julius, in 1588. He rebuilt the little church at its current location. It was consecrated on August 2, 1610 by Eucharius Sang , the auxiliary bishop of the Würzburg diocese.
The Thirty Years' War ended the independence of the parish Schwarzenau again. From then on, the believers from Stadtschwarzach received pastoral care. Baron Lothar Franz von Erthal only renewed the parish in 1802 . The church received a baroque interior in 1776.
In the 19th century the interior was redesigned and neo-Gothic altars were erected. In 1953/1954 these were removed again and a bare church interior was left behind. The equipment was replaced piece by piece, and a comprehensive renovation in 2009/2010 completed this redesign. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the church building as a monument under the number D-6-75-165-43.
architecture
The hall construction of the Laurentiuskirche is completed by a polygon choir in the east. The typical tower of the Echter era is three-storey, was only later connected to the church and now towers over the facade . Two window axes structure the building. A cornice surmounts the church portal, two columns delimit it. Above it is a copy of the relief of the couple's donors. The choir has a cap vault with the donor's coat of arms.
Furnishing
Due to the varied architectural history of the church, there is hardly any original furnishings left. Jacques Gassmann recently created the altarpiece of the church patron Laurentius . The altar and the ambo date from the 1970s or 1980s. In the places of the old side altars there are two abstract paintings by the artist Jacques Gassmann .
Older components are the processional Madonna in front of the left altarpiece and the baptismal font with two coat of arms stones from the early 17th century. There are two figures of saints in the nave.
Valentin Echter and his wife Ottilie von Holzhausen are shown on the original of the foundation relief made of sandstone in the anteroom of the church on the left. They wear a model of the church. An inscription reads: “1592 The noble Valentin Echter von Öttershausen was 69 years old. This god's house building pencil For the good of himself and his noble family in honor of the holy trinity. ”The most valuable piece of the church is a late Gothic Madonna above the entrance on a frame.
Surroundings
In the churchyard there is a wayside shrine and a war memorial. The round column of the wayside shrine is decorated with grapevine ornaments. St. Lawrence is shown in the essay, a putti crowns the torture. It was probably made in the Baroque era and was last renewed in 2011. The sandstone war memorial erected in 1924 honors those who fell in the First World War. A corrugated column with the name ends with a cross.
Pastor
The pastors of the 19th and 20th centuries in Schwarzenau are characterized by their very short terms of office. This is due to the small size of the parish, which was repeatedly threatened with dissolution.
